Goldfish Food

My parents are thinking of going on holidays maybe next year.
If I were to go on holidays how do I feed my goldfish?

It depends how long you are going for. 3 or 4 days and you could just not
feed them at all and they would be fine.
If it's for longer then you can either measure out the fishes daily food in
little bags and get a neighbour or friend to come in daily or even every
couple of days to feed them or you could buy holiday food. The usual holiday
food consists of white lumps of something which I believe is plaster of
Paris (?) mixed with the food so that it dissolves gradually for the fish to
it. These are horrible things and cloud your water and I doubt that they are
very nutritious. Tetra however make holiday sticks which float. I used these
last time I went away and my water was fine when I got back and the fish
seemed happy.
You can also buy automatic feeders which you fill with your food and it
releases it into the water daily. I don't think they are too expensive.

Back when I still had goldies (*sniffle*) I always kept a lot of elodea
plants in the tank. One time I was gone for about 10 days and despite
instructions and entreaties to suitemates the fish were not fed. When I
came back the fish had nibbled all the plants down to nothing. The fish
seemed fine, though. In retrospect, maybe not getting fed was a good
thing considering no water changes happened during that period.

So depending on how long you are gone, having live plants in the tank
might be an option, instead of those horrible pyramid-shaped holiday
feeder things.

I keep elodea in my tank, the fish love it and more often than
not will destroy it within a few days.
