Okay, I know this question has been asked 100s [if not 1000s] of times, but is
there a goldfish-compatible algae eater that actually takes care of algae?
Thanks :D

Maybe a gar(r)a pingi pingi. Haven't actually tried one, but they are
not a sucker mouth and like the same water parameters/ranges that
goldfish do.

..... I thought a weather loach was compatible AND controls algae. I
remember reading/hearing that somewhere. Is this true?

Nope, Mr W Loach is a general scavenger and won't make any appreciable
dent in your algae. My solution would be to get a weather loach and
two or three largish snails. The snails will eat the algae and the
loach will eat the snail's inevitable offspring.

Alternatively, you could get what is variously known as a butterfly
plec, a hong kong plec or a chinese hillstream loach. This fish is not
a plec although often labelled one. Its not a goldfish-preying vampire
either. Lots of folks will tell you that it doesn't mix with fancy
goldfish because it likes a fast current. I take the view that what it
likes is nice clean well-aeriated water, just like goldfish do. I have
one and its doing fine in my fancy tank. It hangs out near the filter
inlet and outlet so that gives it the current. It seems to cultivate
algae on the tank stones on a rotational basis, and particularly likes
to munch the brown stuff. They don't get bigger than a couple of
inches.

I have 2 weather loaches.

they are not good at controlling algae they just produce 3 fine lines on the
glass. and during feeding they go behind my goldfishes gills but I'm not
sure if that hurts them in any way?

Lots of people in other goldfish group (myself included) use plecos. I've
NEVER cleaned algae from my tanks & they seem to get along great with the
goldfish. They can get quite large though. . . well over a foot in a large
tank.

and there are even more people who kept plecos etc and all of a sudden their goldfish
are dying with strange round marks on them. Ingrid

What do you think of this set-up:
3 comet goldfish
1 pleco (small at the moment)
1 african clawed frog (the albino kind that gets really big,
not the cute gray African Dwarf Frogs that stay small)
2 cory cats
20 gallon tank (at a guess - larger than a 10 but smaller
than a 29/30)
Big filter (sits on floor below tank), but I'm not sure what
kind.

It's at a local vet and was set up several months ago.

I think it's a disaster waiting to happen, but I'm reluctant
to say anything. Maybe I should?

If they're attaching to the goldfish they are probably sucking
the slime coat off of the fish. I do not know this from experience
as I've never seen it, but I have heard horror stories about this.

Gail,

I think you are going to see a lot of dead animals soon if you're being
serious!

I am serious. I could hardly believe it when I saw it. I
mean, I tend to overstock my tanks (a bit), but at least I
keep all small fish (tropicals), and keep goldies &
tropicals in separate tanks.

I've had my 4 goldfish and pleco together for 3 years. I've only had one
case of fin rot in a comet and a case of ick on the pleco.

I saw it happen at my lfs one day. Pleco just came up and attacked
on of the other fish in the tank. There had been a dead fish in that
tank with a round mark on its side when I arrived there.

Normally this takes place a night when the lights are out and most
people do not even realize it is happening until it is too late.
