We generally vacuum stuff out of the gravel and out of the tank entirely-
not into the filter system.
Siphon the gunk into a bucket, toss it, then replace it with
aged/conditioned water.

If you just move the gunk into the filter it can still rot and cause
problems in your tank water.

Thank you for the message

I should of said I am on a meter so its hard for me to use to much water to
clean the gravel if I suck it up into the filter and clean the filter in one
day will I be ok?

I saw the doing it in a shop called pets at home and I wondered if I could
do that too?

just get rid of the gravel completely and dont have to clean the tank at all. just
clean the filters, scrape a bit of the algae off the front. Ingrid

Hello again,

Thank you for all of your reply's but I have two catfish (big) and lots of
common plecs. I take it I would need to replace the gravel if I through it
out? or is there any type of sand I could use that would be cheaper, if so
can you please tell me how to use it because I have never used sand with my
fish!

Silly question really but I'm only a 6 month old tropical fish keeper!!!

if you use sand then just ensure you wash the sand before you add it.
This ensures there are no fine particles that will cloud
the water, and ensure that it is clean.
