View Full Version : is there a THRILL in keeping goldfish?

If you search for thrill in rec.aquaria you get some interesting
results. The thrill of owning rare breeds, the thrill of keeping
difficult varieties, the thrill of feeding live bait to carnivorous
fish, the thrill of your first cichlid breeding... I'd really like to
know more about people's most thrilling goldfish related experiences.

You could say that I'm a thrill researcher. I've been conducting
interviews with people about their thrill experiences at the website
www.chromo11.com.

Feel free to discuss my question here [though I may not be around much
as I'm on about 100 groups at once], but if anyone feels they've
something to say outside your group, then please visit the site and
answer a series of thoughtful questions. I'll meet you there!

Thanks

THRILL NOTES:
1. thrill can come under many other guises - maybe you've met with
pleasure or delight?
2. sometimes the tame can be wild and vice versa; don't judge yourself
unfairly.

I don't get a "thrill" as such, but it's like keeping a dog
they're cute and rely upon you - and when you do a good job
of it, your pleased with yourself.

Big scare at the moment in the UK, people flushing goldfish down the
toilet. The things are breeding in the wild and they aren't indiginous
- threatening the other wildlife. Who'd have thought it of goldfish
that seem so fragile at home!

Any more comments from anyone on the thrill of goldfish

Are these the same goldfish that grow to enormous size and devour
alligators and innocent anglers?

Honest officer, it was a huge goldfish and he said...

"Hey buddy, hand over the wallet and the bloodworms and nobody gets
hurt."

I usually associate "thrill" with some kind of adrenaline rush or at least a
surge of some kind of emotion. Observing my fish is soothing, relaxing,
maybe even a little bit intellectually interesting, like watching a
documentatary on TV. I also get a sense of "quiet satisfaction for a job
well done" when I think of all the little frustrations that I have overcome
and all the work that I've put into giving the fish a nice home. I am
mildly excited about some changes I would like to do, but can't yet (like
adding live plants and maybe more fish).

I am never "thrilled" about my fish.

Mostly it's relaxing, but there is somewhat of a thrill when Cher nuzzles my
hands when I stick them into the tank to do something. The others never do
that.

You know when people see a cat's litter box, they always say,
"Oh, have you got a cat?" Just once I wanted to say, "No, it's
for
company!"

Cher and Ozzy.... I had an "Abba", and still have "Mac", as in Fleetwood
Mac. Both are Oranda's.

She's got a long swoopy tail, (she's got a common/comet style body, don't
know what she's called!) some of her scales are like little mirrors, she's
white, orange and black, including black lips! VERY over the top!

The others are Homer(white common) (he eats the most), Moticia (a black
moor) and Ophelia (white common). There was also Isadora, the oranda, who
did the "feed the fish" dance, but she died. :-(

And she's always the one front and center of the tank!

Sounds like a Shubunkin ... I want to get one to go with my common
(Zeus, named by my youngest son) ... but must get larger tank first.
