View Full Version : Why would a Koi loose it's colours?

My Brother is also a porg with very nice Koi collection.
He just moved about 10 miles from his old house. The water service at his
new house is different from the water service at his old house.
His new pond has not been built so his fish are being held in a temporary
holding pond with major filtration.
One of his Kohaku suddenly lost it's orange colours and his now nearly
white! What could have caused this to happen?

As I understand it, this is not at all uncommon among Kohaku. I was
Just reading about this in Waddington's book "Koi Kichi". On any Koi
the Red/Orange will often fade over time while the black will tend to
be enhanced.
I too had a Kohaku that was almost entirely orange across its back. I
too did the temporary tank thing. When I put it in the new big pond
it was almost all white with a few orange spots. So I don't know if
it was the temporary, small, quarters or just the natural tendency of
the orange to fade.

I've had 2 kohakus that lost their red. One of them was a Dianichi kohaku,
one of the best kohaku breeders in Japan. The other was a ginrinbutterfly
kohaku. He is still beautiful with his flowing tail, and sparkles, but
the Dianichi is nothing beyond beautiful conformation to look at. and
that is a form of beauty too. I hope someday to have a kohaku inhabit it.

A lot of times they lose the red because of stress, water conditions, or
genetics. The Dainichi koi that Nanzi spoke of should not have lost its
color, if it was a "true" Dainichi. A lot of times, koi are bred
domestically from Dainichi parents, but they're not considered Dainichi. For
that matter, only *select* koi bred in Japan by Dainichi can be called
Dainichi; the rest are simply good fish, not "worthy". However, I digress:
another frequent cause of color loss is water conditions. What is your GH?
If it's low, it's almost impossible to maintain red; it's hard to maintain
orange! Try to get your GH up to around 100-125 using plain ol' epsom salts
(which isn't a salt). 1 lb. per 1,000 gallons added over 3 or 4 days should
raise your GH by 50 points. It won't hurt, and it may help.
