View Full Version : A Quest for Fire...I mean...Potash

I called two more garden centers yesterday. One can order Potash, and the
other may have 2 bags in storage. I have to call back today. I was told by
one that it was difficult to get because it is the prime ingredient in bombs
used to blow up buildings in Oklahoma. I don't know if that is true, but
living this close to DC, I guess it could make sense. Anyway, still no
potash in hand, and my plants are yellowing.

Do you have a store that specializes in hydroponics anywhere around where
you live? That's where I found mine. You pay through the nose for it
compared to "regular" garden centers, but if you can't find it cheaply, it
may be better to get it ANYwhere and have it while you're looking for a
"cheap" supply. I think I got a 3 lb. box for $5 or so . . . you only need a
Tbs. per 1,000 gallons, so it's still relatively inexpensive.

Not true ... IIRC Ammonium Nitrate is the chemical they used
while also a fertilizer it is not related to potash...
>(no) potash in hand, and my plants are yellowing.
FWIW potash encourages growth .. more and bigger leaves/longer
stems and roots. If your plants are yellowing you need to
encourage photosyntheses ... to do this you are looking at adding
Nitrogen
Iron
Magnesium
Sulphur
Since adding Nitrogen can cause an algae bloom I prefer to start
by adding epsom salts (Magnesium Sulphate) at 1 tsp/1000 gallons
then chealated Iron 7% at 1/2 tsp /1000
If this does not help and it looks like I need to add nitrogen I
remove plants and start feeding the fish more they can supply the
nitrogen.

If it is similar to what I bought, the "pellets" are about the size of
rock salt and they dissolve in warm water. I put a couple tablespoons in
a half gallon jug, added warm water and swirled until they dissolved.
Then I just poured it around the perimeter of the pond, concentrating it
around the plants.

Call an AG (farm) store like Agway. You'll get a 50 pound bag for like 5
bucks.

There are Iron test kits available...
if it is low you should add chelated Iron, available at better
garden stores.
There is a related condition called Chlorosis .. which is usually
a deficiency of Iron but can also be Zinc or Manganese. It is
characterized by yellowing leaves with dark green veins.
The best guide for plant fertilizer is found at www.thekrib.com
more specifically
http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilizer/
They are talking about aquaria but except for the size of the
dose the info is still the same.
The PMDD recipe is quite good and useful...

I just toss them in the filter. When I used them in the aquarium I tossed them
in the tank. Some koi took an interest, tastes salty I guess...

Chelated iron from a garden store. Powder, cheap. I
dump it into the filter.
Chelated is more expensive than just iron sulphate, and somehow
'more available'. I've forgotten too much chemistry to explain
why. K30a?
Might as well get some epsom salts at the grocery store while
you're at it.

Im pumping from the fish off the bottom to the VF, and the plants are

Band is on a break and we hit the web......
Chelated iron has all sorts of goody minerals bound to it for the plants, 10 to
12 minor elements is best, it lasts the longest and seems to be recommended by
all the plant gurus on the web.
Was good to stretch his brain around something other than the bass strings.

BV,
If you have not been feeding those fish, what have you been waiting for???
As you start to feed, the fish will generate more ammonia, so keep an eye on
it and let it control the feeding rate. Enjoy the pleasure of feeding the
fish.

I don't think this is correct. This describes a chelated micronutrient blend.
Chelated iron only has iron as a nutrient.
Its bound to a chelating agent (like EDTA I think) which keeps it available
to plants, otherwise it undergoes a reaction that I forgot and becomes
harder for a plant to use.

LOL! What fun - I so enjoyed their teen years... they
had two rock bands - which practiced every night in
my tiny house (one story - 24' x 44').
Denny was the drummer... had two sets, going constantly.
Dave was the guitarist - had a total of 5!
BTW, they are now 50 and 47 year old men.
Gosh, I do miss those days.

Oh Yes!! I'd forgotten the excitement of the first pubic
appearance - it was at the school auditoruim... and people
really did pay to hear them! Dave was the vocalist - did
all the Mason Williams songs so well - I think "2525"
was my favorite. And their theme song was "Proud Mary"!
I had friends call me on the phone just to hear them play that
song Live! But what year was that? I'm stuck in the late
60's - early 70s. The boys babysitter was in Nam (a guy
of course) ... I went over for a year in '69. Humm
I'm at a loss as to when the guys were 'popular' ... lol

The boys are playing in a bar (!!!)
and they are 16 to 18.
But it is 'closed' to drinking and is
an all age concert.
They are basically an alternative rock band.
They played punk versions of Summertime and
Phantom of the Opera this spring for school.
They play all sorts of stuff but they love
the classics from the late 60s. The only
thing they won't even consider - disco!

Culligan here offered to deliver supplies. Maybe ask if they will be in
your area later this week? Even if it added a couple dollars to your
total, it might be worth the time you save trying to track it down
elsewhere. (I paid $10 for a 40lb bag -- they said they have to charge
something for the bag, but that the bags have been sitting there for a
year or more. We have veerrry soft water here, so probably not much need
for softening agents.)

This group has been through several names. Right now they are Manic Mantra. Not
sure what that means exactly, but that's not the point anyway...

4'' BD is plumbed to the VF. The pump sits in the VF and forces water to the
pond, which then responds by gravity feeding the VF. This may all change
Sunday. Since I have much liner showing the VF, I plan to sandbag part of
it, and then pump water from lower VF up to higher VF, and let it then
gravity feed back to the main pond. This will hide some liner, and add some
interest.
My VF plants have a root system so dense, I can't pass my hand through the
VF water. I need to move some frogbit out, and find the GF that got sucked
in through the BD. He must be having trouble swimming.
The frogs love the VF. They're making all kinds of noise now.

Not sure...I had intended to feed, but then worried that my design, which
includes many shallows, might attract predators...The fish have been fending
well on algae and skeeters. I am going to try some feeding this week for
fun.

Sunday, I need to dive to finally install my diffuser, so I guess I'll spike
the Lotus then.

I use a handful every ten days or so, maybe 1/4 cup. I do have an
automatic water changer, 24gal/day. About 1000 gal pond.
