LOL. I couldn't resist the title.
When I purchased my last fantail, I got 2 tiny fry in the bag as well. I
lost one, and I think the fantail got it. They were separate for a while
since I put salt and Melafix in the tank with the new fish, but then I put
them back together.
Anyways, the fry is now about 2 1/2 months old and I am sure it is not a
goldfish. My guess is that the eggs were in the floating plants in the
tank, and probably got moved from another tank. I didn't pay attention to
the other types of fish there at the time since I am really only looking for
gf.
Okay, the fry is about 1" to 1 1/2" long. It has a straight back and a long
peduncle with small tail fins. It has a dorsal fin, a small one. It's a
long, straight fish, really; mostly white in color but is starting to
develop a bluish tint. The tail area is starting to look reddish as well.
It's eyes seem big for the body and actually made me think of a telescope
eye, but it does not have a GF body. Oh, it also has a black dot on each
side of the tail, almost a triangle shape. As fun as it is waiting to see
what this wee guy will turn out to be, winter is coming and my tanks aren't
heated. If this is a tropical fish, it will want heated water, won't it?
Any idea's on what it could be? I am starting to think "tetra", maybe, but
I don't know much about tropical fish at all, and any tetra's I've ever had
were about this size when fully grown. Is there a web site where I can see
pix and maybe figure out what the wee guy is?
Thanks,
Tammy

I have taken pictures of the fry, but I don't have a digital camera, so I
have to wait to finish the film and get it developed... "Snail-snaps" LOL.

It turns out that my wee fry is a sword-tail. I went back to the same store
and he just had a shipment in again, so I ID'd it from some 1/2 grown ones
he had of the same color. Mine is bluish with a red tail. I was going to
give it to my brother to put in his tropical tank since I have only gf
tanks, but he's afraid his "snake" will eat it, so I will keep the baby
until it gets a little bigger. It's in a 5g tank with no heater but it
seems to do well. It has also been eating gf food, but alot is real foods -
peas and home-made gel, as well as crushed flakes, and it is doing well.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
