That is a Corydoras- looks like C. paleatus (Peppered Cory) and they do not
eat algae.
As far as harming your goldfish- they can, but indirectly. If your goldfish
eats one it will lodge in its throat- how good are you wilth a pair of
tweezers?

I second the Cory ID, photo isn't good enough for me to go lower than
that. Cory's are not known as algea eaters...

hehe :0) I had visions of my goldfish with a mouth approx. 3mm in
width, with a 1cm wide corydora in its mouth!
I suspect it won't be a problem for quite some time...
Is there anything else I should be aware of with corydoras?

Not really- they're a fun fairly easy fish as long as the temps stay in the
proper range.
They *do* like to be in groups as do most (all?) cories.

Since looking at that website noted in the one above, they seem happy
between 20-26'c I've had no probs so long, and they've been in there
a month. Not seen them eating a great deal, but I suspect they'd be
acting strange and or dead after a month if they weren't eating!
