My goldfish do Ok hanging around with a big apple snail... although, like
anything else, snails can introduce disease to your tank.

co exist quite happily, I only lost one goldfish and that was when I was
away for a weekend and the yabby got a little too hungry.

I'd rather not take that risk.

Dojo aka weather loaches are great fun and totally gf compatible.
Hillstream loaches aka butterfly plec's can also do ok, although
ideally they should have more current than fancies will like. So long
as the water is clean and well-oxygenated there should be no problem.
They will also take care of brown algae.
Don't confuse the hillie with any kind of "algae eater" or "chinese
plec". These can develop a taste for gf mucus.
If your gf are not huge you will also do ok with a little shoal of
zebra danios or white cloud mountain minnows.
Some people are really fundamentalist about only keeping gfs with gfs.
I find this really odd. If the fish are compatible then why ever not?

I've got 2 fantails with 2 zebras (well, 1 zebra at the moment, one died of
natural causes (well, as natural as bad water and fin rot gets unfortunatly)
...
Was warned about them being eaten, but never seen anything bad happen ..

If you have fancy GF, don't add any non-fancy GF like Fantails,
the fancy will never be able to compete for food...Fancy are just
so dumb..

My fancies always got at least as much food, and possibly more than my
commons. They just paid more attention. Of course, after the feeding,
the commons would chase the fancies around, which didn't look like
much fun for them.

I have my gf with some Koi and Oscars... Yes Oscars... Everyone has
done well except my large Black Moor... Its one of those things I knew was
going to happen, but right now the gf and koi are way to big for the Oscars
to get in thier mouths...

I have kept goldfish and weather loaches together for years without
any conflict.

I don't think so, they don't interact at all. Would you care to
elaborate more?

In this thread, has anybody suggested adding White Cloud Mountain minnows?
Max size is 1.5 inches, and even a small school of them coexist cheerfully
with some goldfish. I have nine Clouds in my tank, including some just an
inch long. These tiny, active coldwater fish add a nice element of scale
to your aquarium, since the greater variety of sizes is very attractive.
Also, they are slender fish which will not overtax your water quality.
By searching the Net you can find much positive info about them.
