View Full Version : Big Comet with little Goldfish

I have a 90gal tank with a 9" Comet. He's been alone most of his life.
Yesterday I added 5 smaller comets about 1-2" long. At first the samller
fish
were chasing the big guy around, not really nipping but kind of chasing
around once in a while.
Now the tables have turned and the big guy kind of scares the little guys
away.
Is it too stressful to have a big fish like that in the same tank with all
these small guys?

Fish, kids and puppies... Establishing the pecking order, it sounds like....

If they fit in his mouth, they will.
Also if you didn't quarenteen those smaller fish, there is a reasonable
chance they'll give cooties to the larger one (and v/v).

I have big ones and little ones in the pons, they all seem to get
along just fine. The smallest were born a few weeks ago, less than
an inch long.

Hi Donald,
Can you elaborate more on Q-Tine'ing fish?
I was thinking along the same lines, and setup a Qtine tank
but it wasn't ready in time for the new fish.
How long should I hold a fish in Qtine?
What needs to be in the Qtine tank, do I need Salt?
How much one tblspoon per 5gal or more?
Do I need other medicines for the Cooties and what is v/v?
What should I do now that I added these fish in with big Bubba?
Should I be treating them for Cooties/VV or other?
They seem to be getting along fine today except one of the
2" Shubunkin is sitting on the bottom gravel half the time,
fins are NOT clamped, he just seems to be tired, and when I walk over
he spazzes out like crazy and hits the tank glass abruptly sometimes. Is
he in shock from transferring over from a different tank? He's never done
that before.
I used a floating bag to equalize the temperature when I transferred him in.
90gal tank, 0 Ammo, 0 NitrIte, very very low NitrAte, PH is a bit low at
6.0-6.5
Two Aquaclear 500 (I added the second one 2 weeks ago) with Laguna Pond
Lavarock,
some EHFISUBSTRAT, and Hagen Bio-MAX media, and of course the sponge.
Temperature is 65degF. Sorry for all the questions. (PS: I do have an
airstone)

I generally hold new fish in Qtine for 3 weeks if they show no symptoms.
If they are symptomatic, treat as possible, THEN 3 weeks.

Depends on the fish, also salt is a religious issue. For me, I try to
maintain my goldies in 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons.

If you're bringing fish in from a pond they need to be cleaned up.
Ingrid has stuff on her website about that.
From a LFS I don't use any meds "just in case" but only if the fish are
sick. Other people have different practices.

Vice versa except I can't spell...
