View Full Version : Any Need for "Preventitive Medicine"??
who me?

Is there any way, or should there.... be a way to treat fish water
with medicines, etc to keep little nasties from even getting a chance to
start?
How about a "one a day" vitamin for fishies, or is there enough
in the food they get?
Reason is that I see so many posts with sick fish and they don't always
recover quickly, its too late, etc and was wondering if there was any
strategy to preventing the basic illnesses gf get.

The best strategy for keeping healthy fish is to keep their water absolutely
impeccable all the time (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, under 10 nitrate). That way
they are at their strongest and can fight any little infections off before
they take a hold.

a little salt in the tank. add 1 teaspoon salt per 5 gallons, no additives, dissolve
first, add slowly. it stimulates the slime coat to turn over, and the new slime
contains antibodies and anti-microbial proteins.
but I agree with previous poster.... lots of clean clean water.
also, close the tank once you got it stocked properly and dont put any new fish in
that tank. bringing in new fish even if they been quarantined seems to set off a
cycle of disease in all of em. Ingrid
