Can someone help me I have had goldfish now for nearly a month and 2 of the
fish both in seperate tanks have developed a black smudge on one side of
their bodies 1 GF is a Shubunkin approx 1 1/2" and the other is a Rynkin
(whatever the spelling is) approx 2" feed on flake food and partial water
changes every weekend approx 25-30% as I know they are messy fish

what are your water quality parameters, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH?

It could be caused by high ammonia concentration in water.
The good news is that the black colour does not come on until the water
condition is better and the healing process begins. Your fish maybe was in
'bad' water or under severe stress until you bought it.
The patch lasts for a week or more, and clears within two to three weeks
