I have two goldfish in tank. They were very friendly but since this
morning they changed behavior. We can't come close to their tank
because they are very scared and swim like crasy. I'm affraid they
will hurt themself. After that they hide at the corner. They eat very
well (as usual) but wait for us to move out of tank and after that
they eat from the bottom.

Any advice, please?

How big is the tank?
How long has it been running?
What are the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and temps in the tank?
Are there any other fish in it?
Do you have other animals / children in the house?
Did you do any cleaning / painting recently?
What sort of filters / lights / heaters are in the tank?

darting is a symptom of bad water quality. something has happened to the water.
EMERGENCY
1. check the water parameters: pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrates
2. do the fish physical
3. change some or all of the water, add 1 teaspoon salt per 5 gallons water
4. from the water parameters and physical decide on a course of action
5. if there is nothing specific, do the tub to tub method

Thank you guys,

The only thing that was changed is that I filled up my tank with an
additional gallon of water. (the same temperature as in tank and water
was treated with AquaPlus 5ml and Cycle 5ml). I have 10 gallons tank
with Aqua-Glo fluorescent light and AquaClear Mini filter (polyester
wool, foam, carbon and ammonia remover).

We have two comets, for 5 months. Had no problems before, except with
algae (green water) that were treated with P Clear two weeks ago.

We have no kinds or other pets. Our boys (we are not sure if they are
really boys) are very friendly. I purchased them as feeders, to setup
new tank, but they survived and become our pets. They were very
communicative, acting like dogs when we come back home or come close
to them.. One of them sometime took food from hand.

Since yesterday morning, when we are not close to tank, they act
normal. However, if we come close – they are darting and hiding.
I will test water today.

Just to let you know the problem was with low pH. That suprisedme
because I checked the tap watet I'm using few months ago and it was
OK.

this the dashing around fish? yeah, low pH is the usual cause, also jumping. now,
is the pH low out of the tap or in the tank? got gravel? cause this could be
brewing anaerobically which puts acidic products into the water and brings the pH
down, then it kills the biobugs and the ammonia spikes with a high pH. Ingrid

The problem is with the tap water. The guy in local pet store, who
tested the water, told me that this is the common problem in our part
of city. I tested tap water and its 5.5.

However, there were some repiping in the building in September; they
changed all fresh water pipes. I'm wondering, maybe that's the reason?

could be. maybe you need water filter kind that screws onto end of hose that has
carbon insert to remove heavy metals. but you definitely gotta get some buffer into
teh water, use organic dolomitic limestone, get at garden center. of course always
test what you got by putting a quarter cup or so in a gallon of water to see if pH
just goes up to 7- 8.4 or so, no higher. the bad stuff will go over 9.0 and is
toxic. Ingrid
