How long?
Would a 2" or so fancy goldfish survive in a 5g tank for the length of the
quarantine? (This is the only extra tank I have)

get a 20 gallon rubbermaid bucket. the more clean water for quarantine, the better.

I always promise myself to wait at least 2 weeks, but never make it
that far, usually 7-10 days. The point is to give time for whatever
the newbie is carrying to manifest itself, but I don't think that
always works: I can't recall ever adding a new fish that didn't
cause an ich outbreak, even after quarantine. But then, as I said,
I'm impatient.
As for 5G being enough: yes, but you'll need to change the water
frequently, even with pre-cycled filtration. I'd do 50% PWC daily
at a minimum.
good luck,

I've quarantined 2 fancies in a 5g for 3 weeks. They were only about 1 to 1
1/2" long. I added salt (1 tsp/gal) and kept the water changes up, every
few days. It's more work, but can be done. It's better than adding disease
to your main tank.
