Ok, you can leave fish on their own for a week without feeding
what about fry that are between 4 days and a week old? Can they
withstand being left for 2,3 or 4 days on their own?

I would imagine that they are very much like any kind of baby and need to be
fed frequently to survive. I don't think I'd risk leaving them for long
without some kind of food source. They would nibble on algae, so you could
put an algae covered ornament from your main tank in there while you're
away. I expect this would keep them going for a short time.

Mel they are less than a centimeter long and maybe a millimeter thick -
would they be able to eat the algae/diatoms from an ornament yet?

I really don't know. I used to see mine picking at algae when they were tiny
but whether it would be enough to sustain them without anything else I don't
know. Perhpas it would be best to get a babysitter?

Do you know if algae tablets can sit in the water, or
will this mess the water quality up?

I would imagine that they'd dissolve eventually. Do a little experiment and
put an algae tablet in a glass of water and watch it for a day or two to
see. Tetra make holiday food sticks which are much better than the old white
blocks you can get. Perhaps one of them would tide the fry over for a couple
of days.
