What do the lumps look like? Perhaps like tiny grains of salt? What color?
under scales?

as it has occured quickly (I assume), it could be a bacterial
infection.
Check out this website:

It's furunculosis, a bacterial infection. You will need antibiotics to feed to
the fish, it's inside the fish. I'd suggest Seachem kanacyn, a powder with a
small measuring spoon and instructions for mixing into food.
Good luck.

You should be able to get help at the LFS. Aeromonas is the bacteria that
causes the condition, lots of meds available for it.

furunculosis is a generic term meaning " A skin condition characterized by the
development of recurring boils". in fish this can be due to different bacteria.
in fish this is caused by Aeromonas salmonicida
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364_10950-27389--,00.html
usually lumps are coming from the inside out, so need to feed the fish antibiotic
food for at least a month, and since it is aeromonas you can kill it by getting the
temp of the water up to 84oF for a few days. You MUST use good aeration tho.
Crank the temp up fast, but lower it slowly 4o per day.
you also need to keep the water pristine, changing water to keep nitrates 20 ppm or
lower. Ingrid

no. in the water is good for open sores, if/when they open, but for these need
systemic antibiotics. you can soak GF food like pellets in the antibiotic and feed
that tho. Ingrid

no, fish dont swallow water. they get the water they need from their normally very
wet food. as long as they are eating, they got a good chance of making it. Ingrid

If you can find the name of the med he gave you it would answer questions.
Many antibiotics work in the water, they are absorbed into the skin or into the
blood via the gills.
