How often to replace them?
I've had the filter going for over a month now (cleaned it out 2x so far) and
both sets are looking a little dingy, but the filter hasn't slowed down at all.

When I had a Fluval canister I usually replaced mine one at a time,
maybe every 6 weeks or so--sometimes a lot longer. Rinsing them
lightly every four weeks seemed to do the job most of the time. You
can cut your own from that packaged stuff (blue & white, nylon?
plastic? brillo-paddish) they sell at aquarium stores. Rinse them,
gently, only in de-chlor water. Don't replace them all at once or
you'll lose a lot of bio-bugs.
"Dingy" might just mean they have a lot of biobugs living on them.

What the dilley with the foam pads replacement, why can't you just squeeze
them
out and reuse them indefinitely? I've had mine for almost a year now and
they don't
seem to be clogging up. Am I making a big booboo here?

The booklet that came with my filter recommends replacing the filter pads
"regularly" but says they can be cleaned several times before replacement. No
info on exactly how often though, which is why I asked. I wonder if it's just a
ploy to make more $$$...

Hey, call me a cynic, but EVERYTHING is a ploy to make
somebody more money.

it isnt just the money... tossing old filters usually means tossing the established
biobug colonies. NOT a good thing. Ingrid
