Hello,
We saw some thing strange at one of the local Thai resturants - severa of
the goldfish (and obviously these were gold fish) had no dorsal fin - not
even a vestige!
Poor things looks like it was hard to swim. Are these a "breed"?

Yes, it is a variety of goldfish, called a Lionhead or a Ranchu. I
still have not been able to tell the two of them apart. Check out
this site for picture of the different types of goldfish. It has been
very helpful. As well as the second one on goldfish anatomy.

Cheryl,
There are a number of Goldfish varieties without Dorsal fins. The Major
ones are Lionheads and Ranchus, but there are also the Edonishikis, Phoenix
(a favorite of mine), Bubbleeyes, Celestials, toadheads, Nankins, Maruko,
Kinranshi, Buffalohead, Osaka Buffalohead, Shukin, and then there are the
Chinese where they are generally lumped in as Egg-shaped fish, although the
Dragonback is considered a different grouping.
Probably what you saw in the Thai restaurant were Thai Ranchus which have
been breed from Japanese Ranchus of the highest quality and now the Thais
are trying to work their way in to the Ranchu market.

Thanks for the info Tom - I am not into the various breeds - I am just
trying to keep my two feeders healthy.
There were two or three of them in the tank - very round and some what
"plain" - no big eyes, fancy heads, but an interesting "brown gold" color.
