View Full Version : GF scales losing color?

I thought that my goldfish, who is 11" and 5 yrs old, was getting white
spots, but it seems that one or two of his scales have lost thier gold
colour and are now white. He is very healthy and his tank is clean and well
balanced. Is this normal for large comets when they get older? Is there a
food that will help him retain his colour?

Thanks!

If a GF loses scales, it often happens that the replacements
that grow back are white or colorless. Could that be it?

No, he's not losing any scales, at least none that I have noticed and I keep
a close eye on him.
Do they naturally shed scales? There are no sharp or abrasive objects in the
tank. Could it be like a bruise or something from jumping? He is very active
and alert so I don't think he is sick, I just think he lost the colour on
those scales.

many, many GF ultimately turn white as they age. Ingrid

I just realized today that Cher the Shubunkin is losing all her black spots,
including her cool black lips! I've had her over a year now, and figured I
was safe as far as her changing colors... soon she's going to be all orange.
(but sequiney looking)

Is there any correlation between coulour and exposure to sun and UV etc...?
My freinds pond lcomets are vivid red, I wonder if the sun affects their
pigmentation?

Oh, then what would be the ideal environment (temp, sun or no sun, foor
type) for a GF to retain it's color or , if possible to gain better color?
Thanks lots.

I imagine more sun, not sure about water temp or food,
but I know there's tons of different priced food out there.
Last week I saw Hikari food, 8$ for a tiny package of
about 100 pellets. I can barely get through one feeding
with that.

Ok maybe 2 feedings.
The pellets were ultra tiny, you could fit at least
200 pellets in one tablespoon. There is not even
one tablespoon of pellets in the whole package for 8$.
Does that make any sense? OK so I'm canadian so
it costs twice as much here, but even at 4$ US it dosen't
make sense. I can get a 4lb bag of much bigger Pellets
(Thousands of pellets) for 12$ at Wally World... ...:)

I have about 30 goldfish and 8 tanks.
220gal
100gal
55gal
55gal
35gal
20gal
5gal

15 of the fish i am babysitting for someone.
I know 30 fish sounds crazy, but If I didn't take
them on, they would be frozen in his 2ft deep pond by now.

Hey Kodiak,

I know what you mean. Right now I have about 80 fish, but for me I only
feed every two to three days, but still that is a lot of fish. I think that
Fishsampai http://www.fishsempai.com/ may have foods and Andrew is in
Canada. Big Al's and MOPS both have Canadian outlets.

A fish's coloring can be affected by a variety of reasons. Changing of
light intensity, changing of foods, temperature variations, and, of course,
some distress and/or disease. My fish tend to loose some of their intense
coloring when they are brought in from outside where they are lighted by
fluorescent lights. Fluctuations in pH can also cause color changes.

As far as foods go, I think you can get Sho-Gold through Fish Sempai, but I
am not sure. Sho-gold is a great food, and I have had excellent results
from its use. Individuals on some of the Canadian Goldfish lists can
probably point you in a direction of getting less expensive foods which are
good for your fish. You missed a good Boxing Day sale at Big Al's from what
I heard with discounts up to 80% off.

I've never been clear whether the Sho-gold Tom touts is the same
one I used to get from www.goldfishconnection.com or not.
I used to buy "sho-gold" from them, but now they only sell
"Pro-gold" which looks about the same: extruded pellets, varying
sizes, none longer then 1/4" or so. My fish really like it.
No color enhancers, slow sinking, etc. The pellets are too
big for little fish, but it crushes easily to accomodate them.

For the record, there's this sho-gold: http://www.shokoi.com/shogold.htm
which has a store locator which includes Canada and indicates indeed
Fish Sempai has it.

For Pro-gold, go to http://tinyurl.com/37y7e and
scroll down to the FAQ for info about ordering in Canada.
