I am trying to use marbles and large colored stones for the bottom. Anyone have
experience with this? Does waste material get stuck under the stones? Is
siphoning a problem with these ?

That's what I use, but only covering about 1/3 of the bottom of the
tank, leaving the rest bare. Yes, stuff gets stuck, but I siphon it
out with the weekly water change. It's not hard to get everything.
The fish move the stones around a lot and much of the gunk gets
stirred up and goes into the filter.

doubt it. my comets push the silver rocks I have all around the place. I move
the rocks to one corner every now and then and then wait to see how long it takes
for them to scatter them.
both fish are getting new rocks in their stockings this year.
