First of all you need to check your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite,
nitrate)as this sort of problem can sometimes be caused by poor water
quality.
If your water is perfect (ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate under 20), then you
could try starving the fish for 3 days than feeding nothing but defrosted,
frozen, chopped peas for another 3 days. The peas will act as a laxative and
clear out any trapped air in the fish. After this soak all food in a little
tank water for a few minutes prior to feeding.

I have one fish which has balance problems after a water change. Out of 6
fish in a 90g tank, it is only the one, and after a day, she is fine.
Anyone know what causes this?

Defrosted SHELLED peas - throw the shells away and feed the bit underneath.

she is sensitive. be careful how much that fish is fed at one time. keep the water
temp higher, like 78oF. do you match water temp when changing water? Ingrid

I don't have a heater in the tank. The temp is around 75 all the time. I
keep an eye on it because of no heater. Yes, I do match water temp when I
change. Is sometimes a bit warmer, but I check and re-check and check some
more! before putting in the tank. I have well water, so I don't use
additives of any kind. In my smaller tanks, I keep plastic jugs of water
for changes, but I don't have a container big enough to store water for the
90g tank. I have found that moving that fish to my 10g by herself after a
water change, she is back to normal faster. Wondered if it is gases from
tap... trapped oxygen or whatever it is called (tiny bubbles).

Funny you should mention feeding, since this fish is usually the first one
in line at feeding time. I feed soaked flakes in AM and gel food in PM,
with occasional bloodworms or peas in afternoon for treat. Fish is a
ryukin, if that makes a difference, but does seem to have rounder belly than
other 2 in that tank. She's been that shape since I got her (in Aug/Sept).
She's also short-tailed and about 2" body. It's hard to control who gets
how much, unless I want to start hand feeding them. Thanks, Ingrid.

well water. hummmm. what does the well water smell like? do you drink it? I would
try once aerating the water before putting it into the tank. well water often has a
lot of dissolved CO2 which might affect a touchy fish. and deep wells have the gas
pushed into the water under pressure so it does come out as bubbles. however, the
main reason for bubbles in well water is it is COLD and gases dissolve better in cold
water, then when it warms the gas comes out of solution. The major component of air
is nitrogen ... by way far.
big bellied ryukins are more likely to get floaty from overfeeding.

Our water is great, as far as drinking, etc. It's pH is 7.5, the last time
I tested out of the tap. Yes we drink it. We are in a bush, on a "block"
with no farm land. I forget exactly, but the well isn't overly deep - 40 ft
or so. I'd rather drink our water than most people's, like my parents'. I
take a bottle of water there when I go visiting, and they're just around the
corner! LOL.

I have no where to aerate the water before adding it to the tank. I leave
the bubble wall on when I do water changes. I am setting up the basement
this winter to include a few more fish tanks, as well as a laundry tub just
for fishy things... LOL. I hope to get a big barrel to keep water in, but
it still won't help me with my tank upstairs. I'll just have to move
"Samantha" during water changes. I have put her in my guppy tank to eat the
baby snails, so maybe I'll do that until the water is changed (no, I don't
leave her in there!). It'll give her a treat until the water has settled.

How dangerous is it for her to leave her in that tank? She recovers within
12 to 24 hours, but it looks stressful since she seems to continuously swim
to keep herself submerged. When she relaxes, up to the top she goes. Any
other time, she is fine.

maybe she is getting too many and getting a stomach ache.
water in the basement tub can be moved upstairs with a pump. Ingrid
