I'm new to this group and would like to share my experience with algae bloom
in a new backyard goldfish pond (app 1000L).

With the onset of high summer temperatures +30C, the pond was suddenly hit
with a case of algae bloom. You could see the fish only when they were
within an inch or two of the surface. Chemical treatment did nothing.

After researching the subject on the Internet we installed a pressurised
pond filter with UVC.

The water began to clear within three days, and after a week it is crystal
clear!

I must confess I was a little dubious about the claims made for this system,
but now I would highly recommend it for anyone in the same situation.

I appreciate the level of experience in this group and hope to learn a lot
from you guys.

you might want to drop in on rec.ponds.
yes, UV is great for green water, however, long term a veggie filter will keep up
with the wastes from fish especially in the hot summer. UV removes the algae that is
removing the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Ingrid

i also agree, get lots of floating plants, to get those nutrients out of the
water. also do u have any chances on getting a shade to that pond? get
one.

remember that floating plants (like pistia stratiotes) require lots of
nutrients, so once they get done with the ones in your water they will start
to die if you dont get any to them (like iron and micro nutrients)

water lilies are very hard to nurse so start with easy plants.

hope this helps.
