View Full Version : Hi

Richard Jones
December 27th 03, 09:03 PM
Ive new to this newsgroup so first i would like to say hi.
anyway
About 6 months ago I started in fishkeeping, i bought a hexagonal 15 Litre
tank and 3 goldfish.
I didnt go into as much detail ie measuring nitrate levels etc but managed
to keep the water clear, smell free and most importantly keep the fish
happy.
I did not perform partial water changes although advised, this was mainly
because of the size of the tank, i found that the tank was easier to clean
out totally every 8 weeks.
This was good and i have enjoyed keeping these fish but i am looking for
something rather bigger, maybe not massive 6ft long aquariums but definitly
something bigger than 15 L

I have looked at professional tanks which are supplied with a heater
(Obviously for tropical fish) mainly because i like the look af them.

i have decided on a FLUVAL 600 tank
This is in my local DIY store for £79.99 which compared with mail order
prices is very cheap
The tank is 2ft long (60cmx30cmx34cm)
and is 60Litres
My question is how many fish would i be able to keep in the 60L tank bearing
in mind that i will be sticking with coldwater goldfish - Black Moor maybe
and will be using a FLUVAL 2 Powered Filter

Thanks for any replies
Richard.

the usual recomendation is one adult goldfish per 10 gallons of water, thats
the limit. remember that goldfish are very pollutant and they eat a lot,
they excrete a lot, so one fish/10 gals. also remember when buying that
they are young but they will be adults sooner or later, you see them small
but they get big fast.

hope this helps. :-)

Think how big they might get - we started with 2 goldfish each maybe 2
inches long. Seven years later one is about 9 inches long and the other 7
inches - they are in a 150 litre tank and to my eye that's still too small.

[top posting because that is the way this thread seems to be going...]
Yo, Dick...

How many goldfish grow that big?
Most all of them if kept properly.

If you keep three fish in a 15l tank I would be VERY surprised if you
EVER got a fish that lived well enough to grow to its proper size.

almost all commons and comets get that big unless they are genetically stunted or
stunted by bad water. and they get that big in a couple years in a pond. Ingrid

Richard,

As others have said if kept correctly quite a few. Let's see, I have two
Comets at 9 inches, a Bristol Shubunkin at 8 inches, a Calico Oranda at 7
inches, 4 Philly Veils at 6 inches and 4 that were only pea size last year
at this time that are 4 inches now, 36 Ranchus that were pea size last
Spring that are all between 4 and five inches in length, 7 Blue Phoenix that
are 5 inches, 9 Calico Phoenix that are 6 inches, 4 Matt Phoenix that are in
the 4 inch range.

So if you provide enough space in gallonage and proper feeding you too can
have nice sized fish.
