I recently let go of most of my stock.. Many tropicals, gf and koi.. ( I can
hear the screaming already ). I bought a Koi today, a fingerling.
Approximately 2 and half inches.. Neat thing, is this fellow is almost
completely black, with a silver bottom.. I have never seen a Koi cloured
black like this. Needless to say there was a lady there at the same time,
wanting my Koi.. Boy was she mad when I told the clerk I wanted this one..
Most of my tanks have gone to storage for the time being, luckly enough I
have myself a hang on filter and a heater still here. I went a got myself a
40 rubbermaid container this evening and I am going to place him in there
for a few monthes.. I am going to let him grow out a bit then resell the
feller.. Anyone know what foods help this fellow increase his size quickly?
I know temperature plays a roll, but much like Cichlids I would think water
qaulity is going to play a roll in the growth of this young feller..( I know
I am going to hear that this guy belongs in a pond, and I could not agree
more when they larger.. )TIA

Tim,
If you really want him to grow, keep the water at about 72 degrees. Weigh
the little guy about every two weeks and with that weight calculate what 2
to 3% of his body weight comes to and divide that amount in to six separate
feedings to be fed every two hours through out a 12 hour day. Have a light
on a timer so the tub gets good light for 12 hours of its day. Get a
fluorescent fixture that holds 4 - four foot bulbs or two shop lights. The
biggest thing is to keep the water pristine clean and clear. Beings the
fish is suppose to be young, feed it a good food that has about 50% protein
levels and is high in lipids. With this feeding regime (but only using a
food with 32% protein) I raised a KOI from 1.5 inches to 9 inches in two
months.

Holy smokes... Thats incredible Tom... In the 40g container I am going to
use a an AC 300... More than enough filtration, I would think. This is for a
single Koi.. I have the wheat germ food, frozen BS, Tubifex, and if needed I
can do some BW's and krill from time to time..
