Hi all.

My girlfriend has had two goldfish ( a comet and a Shubunkin) in a small (5
litre) bowl for 18 Months. Three weeks ago I bought her a larger (25 liter)
aquarium for christmas which the fish were placed into. They seemed happy a
lot healthier in the new tank. One week ago four more fish (a shubunkin, a
fantail and two smaller fast swimming ones that I cant remember the name of)
were introduced into the tank. The local pet store informed us that there
would be no problem doing this. All six were swimming around quite happily
for the week. However yesterday we found that both the original fish had
died, side by side. Neither had shown any sign of disease prior to this. Is
this sort of thing common?

QUARANTINE FOR NEW FISH IN TANKS
Stage 1 = new fish goes through dips etc. and is allowed to recover from stress
... diseases are treated, fish gets used to pH, water conditions, food, etc.
(scrapes done to establish what the fish has and treated accordingly) 0-2 weeks
... these dips include 30 seconds to 2 minutes ('til fish comes up on side) in 3% salt
... potassium permanganate dip..

Stage 2 = new fish gets established biofilter from main tank, introduction
to new diseases under optimal conditions of no "other" stresses (like new tank
inhabitants/territorial disputes) meds are used if necessary, (scrapes done to
establish what the fish has and treated accordingly) (2-4 weeks)

Stage 3 = new fish is introduced into main tank ... old tank is kept cycled with a
little food just in case .. after a couple weeks, isolation tank can be broken down
and sterilized

If new fish arent quarantined they bring in disease that typically makes the older
fish sick or kills them. ingrid
