Hiya,

I have just bought a fantail and before adding it to my tank I noticed that
it had two small round brown marks on it. After examining the fish closer
and a little searching on the internet I think that these two marks are fish
lice.

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/images/branchiura3.jpg

I have the fish in a separate tank at the moment by itself and it seems to
be very lethargic. Is there any treatments that I can get for this or
should I take this fish back to the shop and get another one?

Thanks for any help

Stephen

Get yourself a pair of tweezers and pull the fish lice off the fish.As he's
new and in new water there probably aren't any eggs there so I wouldn't
treat with a fish lice med for now as they are very harsh and would stress
the new fish.Keep a very close eye on him in case anymore appear (they might
be smaller if babies), in particular in a months time as this is
approximately when any eggs would hatch. I'd also add some salt at a
teaspoon per gallon just to aid healing in any wounds he has from the lice
and make sure your water quality is absolutely perfect so no infections can
set in (ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate under 20). Keep the lights out and let
him recover in peace as it will be quite an ordeal for him.
I rescued a fish myself a few months ago who was covered in fishlice when
she arrived. She was in a terrible state but perked up as soon as the lice
were removed and looked good as new within a few weeks. Good luck!

Hi Mel,

Thanks for the advice about getting rid of lice. I must admit that I don't
feel confident in pulling it out with tweezers because I don't want to hurt
the fish. So thanks for the advice about doing this, and adding salt and
turning the lights off etc, but I'll probably just take it back to the
aquatic shop tomorrow and let them deal with it. They can probably help it
without clumsily hurting it.

My worry is that as I put the fish in the main tank (before I seen the
lice), I might have infected the whole tank where the other fish are. I
can't see anything at the moment, but fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help, again! :-)

They really aren't hard to pull off. If you transfer the fish to a small tub
with a bit of tank water and hold it gently over it just in case he
wriggles out and falls, then pick them off with tweezers in the other hand.
Or you hold the fish and get someone else to pick them off.
It really is better for the fish for them to be removed as soon as you
can.He will be much happier.
if you got him out of the main tank pretty quickly you'll probably be ok. Of
course there's always the chance that one dropped off him and escaped but as
long as you rigorously check the fish every day for a week or two you'd spot
any if they were there.

Hi Mel,

I might give it a try tonight then when I get home from work, even though
I'm a bit worried about it. But as you say it's not that difficult, I
should give it a try, so long as I'm careful. I'm starting to feel attached
to the fish now, so would rather help it to recovery than take it back to
where it got the lice from in the first place. I'd always be wondering if
the people who worked there flushed it down the toilet, rather than help it
to recovery. :-(

I have checked the tank and other fish very closely, and there's nothing
visible anywhere, so I hope that I've been lucky and that no other lice have
fell off.

When you recommended adding a teaspoon of salt per gallon to the recovery
tank, is this definitely okay with goldfish? I always thought that they
were freshwater fish so salty water would poison them? Am I okay to use
regular cooking salt, the same stuff as I sprinkle over my, ahem, fish and
chips? :-)

Thanks for your help, and any other advice you or anyone can offer before I
get busy tonight.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi Ingrid,

Thanks for the recommendation, but if Mel says it's not available in the UK,
then that's a shame. :-( I'll try and pick the lice off tonight, and
fingers crossed it goes okay.

Thanks,

Stephen

A teaspoon per gallon is absolutely fine for goldfish so don't worry. It's a
great treatment for cuts and scrapes and acts as a tonic to the fish. It
won't hurt him, I promise. They can tolerate a much higher level than a
teaspoon without any ill effects. Don't use just normal cooking salt though
as it tends to contain anti-caking agents etc which aren't good for the
fish. If you go to any pet shop or fish shop they will sell aquarium salt
which is cheap and definitely ok. If you have a Wilkinson's near you they
sell boxes of tonic salt in the pet section for 69p which is fine too.
When you grab the lice they should pull off fairly easily and the fish will
feel better immediately. The lice have nasty little hooks which they dig
into the fishes flesh with so it must feel horrible and the quicker they are
gone the better!
Good luck!
Mel.

Hi Mel,

Thanks for the reassurance that the salt should be okay, I just wanted to be
sure! :-) I'll go to Wilkinson during my dinner hour and get some of the
tonic salt that you suggest - it's a good job that I asked about this, or I
would have used normal salt!

Thanks again, and I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

hold the fish in the water and upside down with one gill in the water, fish will
thrash less. but definitely remove lice in tub of water rather than in tank. be
sure to wet hands before grabbing the fish. be sure to check under and around the
anal fins. Ingrid

Hi Ingrid,

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it all in mind. I'll be leaving work soon
so will post back later this evening from home and let you all know how I
got on!

Thanks,

Hi there,

This is just an update. I came home from work tonight and removed the lice
with a pair of tweezers, there were two of them. One was on the body of the
fish, and the other was on the underside of the tail fin. They came out
very easily, and the fish seems a lot happier now, and is swimming around in
a tank of salted water. I'll keep a close eye on the fish in case I missed
any, or in case any start growing again.

Thanks for the help and advice, and I'm glad I didn't take it back to the
shop now! :-)

Stephen

Thanks, and thanks to you and Ingrid too for the advice.

I couldn't believe how easy it was to pull them out - I had visions of me
nipping the fishes skin, or of the fish flapping about in my hands, so
thankfully it wasn't as bad as that!

I hope they don't come back, but if they do, I'll be ready! ;-)

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi there,

Just a quick update, I looked at the fish yesterday, and it had a fish lice
by its mouth, so I pulled this off easily enough. I think this must have
been one I missed from last week, as it was quite big and in an
awkward-to-see area. I'm doing water changes every day, as well as using
salted water in and leaving it in a shaded area. Is there anything else
which I could be doing?

I guess this resets my 1 month countdown, which is a shame, as I can't wait
to put the poor thing, called Sandy, into the main tank.

The only good thing is that the fish in the main tank haven't got fish lice,
but they have probably got ich's! :-( From one disease to another, and only
a week into this... :-s

Take care,

Stephen

I hope she does too, I was dying to put her in the main tank last week, but
am glad I resisted now, or I'd have had more sick fishies! :-(
