I've never had one, but I keep reading here and on other sites that they can
suck the slime coat of goldfish and eventually kill them.

A fish vampire, if you will.

I've heard that Bristlenose plecos do not get aggresive in older life.

Apparantly the violent plecos are nice and calm until they reach maturity
(from what I've heard).

My sister has one that grew up with the goldfish he is about 4 years
old, and has never did that. I also have a sister in law who has 2
goldfish with a pleco he died and she bought a new one and the new one
did this to her goldfish and had to be returned. I think there is
something there with the pleco growing up with the goldfish versus added
to an existing tank with older goldfish. But in either cases I would
never take the chance.

I have found the funky little algae eaters do the slime coat eatting.. My
Pl*c's seem to leave everyone else alone, unless challenged.. I think it is
the Chinease Algae Eatter that seems to eat the fish.. Generally most
Pl*co's are herbavoires ( generally, this goes for the most common ones we
get at the LFS ). I know in my case they are well fed, with fresh frozen
green peas and algae tabs.. My big fellow, now resides with the Malawi's
and I never noticed a problem, except with another Pl*c.. I know they get
territorial when they get larger, but never had any problems with them going
after the tank mates un less provoked to stand ground ( I believe m larger
Pl*c is the sail fin type and looks very nice when its fins are
errected )...

That is a good thing to know.People give Common Plecos a bad rap when
kept with other fish, but my sister was told if kept fed well she would
have no trouble and its been 4 years and has no problem.

My sister in law is another problem, there is no extra food just some
flake. Tank maintance is poor. I can't get into more detail its to
upsetting, the fish , goldfish, are very sick and she will not listen to
me. I avoid going over there.

Why do people spell Pleco's with an asterisk? (Pl*co)

It's in the FAQs. Short story?

There was a noted correlation (not causality) between spelling pl*co out
and the pl*co croaking it.

It's one of those usenet "fun things."

(And a mild troll for those without a sense of humor... Not that I'd
ever stoop to that.... ;-) )
