Hello all,
I have a 55 gallon setup that I have had for about a year now......never had
any kind of problems with it until now...
I bought a house about three months ago and moved from the city water system
to the well system that my house has. The water tests fine and the water
params in the tank are just about perfect thanks to conditioners, water
changes, etc. The only thing that I have noticed is that the water really
smells rotten......even after water changes......to the point where you can
smell the aquarium when you walk in the room(its a rather large room). I
repeat, the water is crystal clear, everything is measuring how it should
parameter wise, and most importantly...the goldies are doing great.......
Its just a nuisance......has anyone had this and is there anything I can do
to get rid of it...like over the counter remedies etc that wont hurt the
tank.
Thanks in advance.....

fill a bucket with the water and smell it. any odor? does it smell like sulfur or
rotting eggs?
if yes, there H2S or hydrogen sulfide being produced either in your water (bacteria
use iron) or in your tank. PP treatment should neutralize the odor. Use it half
strength once a week.

you can buy this from a water softening company. Ingrid

Hello,
Thanks for the input but the website confused me.....yes our water from our
well has a sulfur smell......we use a water treatment system with it(the
kind you use salt in). Im not sure if i want to buy potentially harmful
chemicals to treat the smell.......is there any cures in a bottle that i
could run to the pet store and buy???????

yeah.. I think kordon makes permoxyn or something like that ... PP in soluble diluted
form.
you have a water softening system but I will tell you now, put back flow preventors
on the garden hose faucets and have your well bleach shocked to kill the bacteria
that are using the iron and you can get your sweet well water back.
and since you are using softened water in the tanks... you need a buffer system, I
think the stuff is called "RO right". or get organic dolomitic limestone to get some
hardness back in teh water. there is a section on softened water in the care section
of http://puregold.aquaria.net/
