hello is there anyone out there that can help me, I recently got a tank
18x10x10 inches and I now have 7 guppies living in there and with in a day
or so the water really Stinks to the point its not nice sleeping in the
room. I have put a lid on it and my fluval filter runs constantly, with air
bubble during the day and jusat the jet at night. I have no light on it save
the daylight that comes through my window. and I have a few oxagenating
plants in there from my pond ( but the tank was smelling before I put them
in and they dont seem to have done much. The fish seem fine and happy its
just their owner who is grimising now. I also add "Aquasafe" to te water
when I replace it. anyone got any ideas....

what are your water quality parameters, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH?
especially nitrates? how often do you do water changes?
when was the last time you pulled the gravel out and cleaned it?
air has to run all the time. put a light on it and the plants may do better. Ingrid

Just to expand on what Ingrid said... You should be doing regular water
changes. I would change 80% of your water a.s.a.p. and make sure to do 25%
weekly (in your case, I would do bi-weekly for a while). Have you rinsed
the filter media recently? Rinse in the water you take out of the tank
during your water change. Smelly water means something is definately wrong.
If you put all the fish in at once, in a new tank, that would cause the
smell.

Yeah I put all the fish in at the same time, in the new tank. I change the
water weekly so I will change it twice a week now and rinse the filter, as
for the PH and ammonia levels I do not know them, but I will look into it,
and from now on I will lewave the air on all night and not just the day,
thanks for the advice Ingrid and watkins lady.

Stuart,
You could probably leave your filter media for a bit....you want to ensure the
tank has cycled and rinsing it now may remove good bio bugs. Only rinse it when
it
starts running slower or if its extremely dirty.

Have now cleaned the filter in old tank water. done an 80% refill of water
with fresh rain water that I collected over night and the smell has
gone..... for now at least but I will be changing 30% of water every day and
as soon as I get paid I shall invest in the kits for checking ammonia ph and
nitrates and all the other lovely expensive stuff.
So in conclusion thanks everyone my fish are very happy, and I dont need the
peg on my nose anymore.

Be careful with rain water as it can contain pollutants!

Stuart,
Be careful with the rain water because it can be soft and acid which can
bother your goldfish.

those with heavily alkaline ponds dont usually have a problem but my ponds are filled
with lake water with low carbonate and poor buffer I do have to watch after heavy
rains cause it can drop the pH. Ingrid
