View Full Version : Epsoms and other questions

Well, my Pearlscale that has been sick for the last two months is
still alive. I hope she recovers as completely as possible. After
doing the tub to tub method for a month, I just recently moved her to
her own 10g. Now, though I have a few questions. First, I haven't
cycled the tank yet. I have been though doing 50 percent water
changes, using temperature matched water, daily. I was hoping this
would approximate the tub to tub conditioning. I moved her to the tank
quickly because it had a heater, which I keep at 84, and some of her
reddness was not going away and would occasionally flare up. I was
hoping the heat would help. It seems to have.

My first question is about epsom salt. She is longer dropsied and
hasn't been for a long time. The only symtom she still shows are
occasional blisters that often come and go, usually in the same areas,
within a day. She has been in water with epsom for almost two months.
Is this hurting her? If not, and if epsoms are therapeutic, why are
they not used regularly? But anyway, should I stop using epsoms and
return to regular salt?

My second question is about the blisters. What is the cause? The look
just like fluid filled sacs. They are clear and they always seem to
occur in the same areas. One, on top of her forehead, a second near
her ventral fin, a third on her right side, which is also the side
that shoed the most redness when she was sick and is currently black,
and also a small one on each gill flap. Sometimes her gills look light
pink. Like I said previously, they often arise without a cause and
last little longer then a day. There are stretches when she is blister
free. I had heard mention before about a type of infection, but if
that were so why would they come and go and always in the same areas.
I haven't been able to either find much information in the goldfish
books I have, so it has been frustrating.

My thirsd question in about cycling the tank. I am afraid to cycle the
tank since she is sick. I am currently removing gravel my my other
goldfishes tank and was planning on using it to kick start the the
other. Would it be best to make sure the tank is cycled since she is
in it, or should I wait until she seems much stronger? How much would
50% water changes affect the process. Will this keep up with ammonia
buildup. I am only feeding her twice every other day.

Thank you all, I credit this group with my sucess so far.

no, epsom salts are not used all the time. altho as you know fish can do fine with
them for months at a time. drop the epsom or slowly drop the heat, not both at same
time.
the blisters are bacteria from within. you need high quality antibiotic food and
feed that for a month or more to get rid of this infection.
yeah... light pink gills is sign of bacterial infection in the system.. septicemia.
of course you can cycle the tank with her in it. just dont let the toxins build
up... keep doing massive water changes if needed. OR, get that Biospira stuff that
really does work to cycle in a few days. one other thing. if you got a huge
rubbermaid 40 gallon container then the filter will cycle but there is soooo much
water that it really does dilute out the wastes. cycling a tank is NOT the same as
letting the wastes build up. all that is needed for cycling is a trace of wastes.
too much actually kills the biobug colonies. and polyester batting cycles much
faster than almost anything else. Ingrid

I had been feeding her Romet B for a month, the instructions that came
with it didn't specify how to use over any longer period of time. So I
will put her back on it until she is better. Thanks alot.
