View Full Version : Injury to Black Moor. Do I need to do anything?

My Black Moor managed to squeeze himself down beside my fake tree
stump and got himself caught there. I freed him and moved the stump
to avoid further problems. All seemed well. However, a few days
later it became obvious that he has scrapped himself up. He has
greyish scrape marks along one side of his body and into one eye. He
otherwise appears healthy. Is there something I should be doing for
him? The scrape marks have stayed the same for about 5 days now.

If you don't normally add aquarium salt, adding some (1 teaspoon/5
gallons per day for three days). It increases the goldfish's slime coat
production and puts some stress on the evil buggies.

and water changes. and if it doesnt look better in 24 hours, do a topical treatment.
it should heal up fast. their wet epithelium is more like the inside of our
mouths... like when we eat too hot pizza and burn the roof of our mouth it heals up
overnight. Ingrid

Thanks to you both for the ideas. I have purchased some aquarium salt
and will try it tonight. I was not aware that there was such a thing
as topical treatments for fish. I googled this group and it seems
that Neosporin can be used on fish. Is this what you are talking
about? There are other fish in the tank and I don't want to harm
anyone.

I do do weekly water changes already. I will try bi-weekly. I want
to get Blackie up and at 'em since I am setting up a new tank for him
and his little fishy friends and I don't want to move them til he is
better.

asginpg,

Even better than salt, use some Melafix. It is great for injuries or the
scales, etc. It also helps keep down infection while the abrasions are
healing.

yes, any triple antibiotic creme
do your water changes according to nitrate levels. Ingrid
