View Full Version : Black Moor Bullies

Prior to this weekend I had 2 orandas (each about 6in) and one black moor
(also about 6in). I added a new, small black moor and now the two of them
are picking on the weaker oranda - he's stuck at the top, but otherwise
healthy. I've never seen this behavior before. Why is this happening/how do
I stop it? Thanks for any suggestions, Mark

fish with problems like that really need their own tank. Ingrid

I've got a big burly moor named Beulah who also intimidates any fish
added to her tank. It's a either a territorial or food issue,
I guess. Any companion inevitably ends up hanging out near the
surface and doesn't get enough to eat, despite the advantage
of better eyesight. I eventually decided that isolation was the only
reasonable solution. She now has her own 18T, and if she's lonely,
it's her own damn fault!

I don't know if it's really a Moor-ish trait, but for sure this one
doesn't like competition!

Gunther, my moor, Marty has grown to over 5" in the last year or so, and is a
TERRIBLE bully. I never knew it until recently. You remember when the 55g
tank was broken in my living room? Well, I finally got a replacement (150g)
and put all the fish back together. Marty is a brute. She can't see very
well, and is the only telescope eye in a tank of orandas and ryukins. She
holds her own, and when she senses weakness in Twizzle (the smaller female
ryukin) she goes after her fins. That fish will NEVER have a full set of fins.
Marty's fine as long as she's fed first and everyone stays out of her way,
which is fairly easy in that huge tank.

I've read Moors have a tendency to be more aggressive than other goldfish,
with the exception of the pearl scale -- I've read they're supposed to be
quite nasty. I don't know this last from experience, as I didn't want the
hassle if it were true.

I do know, however, that Moors are just like any other goldfish: Their
personalities differ widely. I had one who was very sentimental. His tank
buddy died (I forget why -- it has been years) and Fred went into mourning.
All he'd do was sit at the bottom of the tank. I even tried bribing him with
food; he wasn't interested. When I finally caught on, I went straight out
and bought a couple more goldfish; he perked right up and was fine from then
on.

Personally, I would follow the advice of others on this list and get Marty
her own place if she's that anti-social. Then Twizzle can have her fins. It
only seems fair. Good luck.

I keep only Black Moors at the moment. They have never been aggressive as far
as I have seen (except for breeding behaviour). Maybe I have been lucky.

My black moore is the softest, dopiest fish I've ever had!

So is mine. He is in a tank with a Lionhead that I got at the same
time and from the same tank at the pet store. They have never had any
problems.
