Hi
I have 2 fantail goldfish (one gold & one black and white spotted) I have
had them for about a year. The spotted one has had problems before floating
upside down and having difficulty getting to the bottom. During those time
I have stopped feeding them for a couple of days and then feeding only
sinking foods. Well, now my spotted one started floating upside down again
started on the top but now just down on the bottom. I did a complete water
change yesterday and today he seems a bit better but I was just watching
them and the gold one is fine eating swimming etc, the spotted one is
staying a little more right side up but still at the bottom. Then main
thing I noticed is that the spotted ones lips don't seem to come out he is
trying to get some food but his lips just seem stuck, especially the upper
one. HELP what can I do, I just hate seeing him like this!
Thank you!!

when mouths seem to be stuck closed, or, the fish takes a piece of food and spits it
out suspect columnaris. treatment is PP see treatment section
http://puregold.aquaria.net/pg/disease/disease.htm
and antibiotics. kanamycin in the water would help.
however, the first thing to do is a 30 second salt dip see treatment section. it
brings swelling down.
you are overfeeding the fish at one time, that is what is contributing to the
problems. what are your water quality parameters, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and
pH? do you keep the nitrates at or under 20 ppm, do you have gravel?

OK am looking in his mouth...but he can't seem to get it open all the way.
He is trying, but the opening isn't like it should be. Anything in
particular I am looking for?
Thanks...

bring the GF slowly up to the surface heads up and as he hits the surface the mouth
will open naturally... if he cant open his mouth, you wont see this. I think he was
suggesting a rock in teh mouth, but a rock usually is seen as the mouth is open and
extended and the fish cannot or wont close the mouth. you have to look deep in the
throat sometimes to find jammed rocks. of course, if you dont have gravel, it is
pointless. Ingrid
