Buying a used tank

I'm thinking about buying a used 125 gallon which comes complete with lighting
and 2 Fluval 304s.

Anyone ever buy a used tank before...if so did it work out okay? (by that I
mean your fish didn't get sick, etc.)

Also.. I'm assuming I should replace all the media in the filters, is that
right?

Replace everything you can. Empty the tank completely. Scrub down completely
with bleech
fill up and empty, fill up and empty repeat several times. Let dry naturally.
Wipe with
a damp cloth, fill up and empty fill up and empty. Repeat until no smell.

Alternatively you could wash it down with a cloth and warm water and add some
other chemical that is less harmful. I have washed a tank down with bleach (a
lot
smaller tank) and it now houses my fry with no problems.

My 55 gallon is a used tank. I've had no problems with it, but you should
clean it carefully, probably with bleach. I would definitely replace the
filter media and give the filter a good cleaning too. You should be fine.
It's an affordable way to get into the hobby!!

Just out of curiosity, what about a tank which has been sitting empty for
quite some time? I have 2x 20 gallon tanks which have been empty for over 2
years. I got them last summer, and they're still empty. The one is pretty
clean but the other has water stains I'll be cleaning off. I'll clean both
before I use them, of course. I just wondered if it is necessary to be so
meticulous in cleaning them out when they have dried up and obviously killed
off any bacteria, etc (other than dust mites, etc).

Myself, ( as far as the twenty's go I would rinse them out and use them.. )
The 55 I would fill and leave it for a week in a location where if it leaked
it would not cause any damage etc..This way you know the silicon is not
leaking.. Another thing to look at, ( if it is a PetSmart tank, there is
usally a build date on the bottom of the tank.. That might be a good
indication on the condition of the sillycone holding the tank together...
