Silly question, but asking seriously - how does one determine the gender of
a 4 yr old comet goldfish?

Well, according to that article, the author can only tell the gender of a
goldfish when it is spawning time. I have one fish, ergo, I have no clue
when spawning time is. And all fish butts look the same to me, so the pics
do me no good. So back to the drawing board.

check out the pectoral fins and gill plates, if there are breeding stars
it's male!

breeding stars? please explain.

Maybe also it'll help to describe him/her. It is 5 yrs old and approx 10"
from mouth to fin end. It is a comet (aka feeder fish) and brilliant gold. A
few white scales, one on each side, fade to a translucent white. The tail is
a translucent white also. The other fins are a translucent gold. Oh and it's
butt is white but the belly is gold. The dorsal fin stands up when he sees
me or is hungry. I problably described every comet in the world didn't I?

Ignore the fish's butt and keep an eye on his/her gill covers and
pectoral fins. When ready to breed, males will show "breeding stars" --
looks a lot like ich the first time you notice it, but it's confined to
the gill covers and the leading edges of the pectoral fins.

In an aquarium with predictable, non-seasonal light and temperature, you
may or may not ever see this. Occasionally, I see it in my tanks. Then I
take notes! So that if I ever decide to give a trio a season out in a
kiddie pool, to try to spawn, I know who is whom.

She, or he, is old enough; whether the fish will ever show you any clear
signs is up in the air. I choose names with arbitrary gender, which is
why Melusina turned out to be male.
