Best time of day to test water by
[email protected]
Hi, is there a better time of day to test PH/Alkalinity then others? I
notice I'm getting swings AM/PM of PH from 7.5 to 8.5 and my KH is
around 130ppm. I may increase KH to try and stabilize but the fish
seem healthy. Any particular time better then others to treat (add
chems) the pond?

Are moss rocks harmful to fish ? by
[email protected]
We are planning a waterfall and pond using Aquascape, and we like the
look of large moss-rock boulders. Heard that moss rocks will increase
the pH level in the water and be harmful to the fish.
Any comments on that ?
Any other rocks that should be avoided in a fishpond ?

Magnetic tape as filter media - advice of a chemical expert? by
Etienne
Hi,
We have seen many alternatives on filter media - ( plastics, rock,
shredder,..), but does anybody has experience with using magnetic tape
( video, audio) as filter media?
Since it is all about creating a huge amount of surface this substance
could fulfill our needs.
One reel of a video-tape...

Pondless waterfall idea? by
[email protected]
Hi All.
I have an idea for a pondless waterfall using an existing irrigation
system and I'd like to hear your reactions to it.
The planned waterfall will be run intermittently when we are outside
enjoying the patio and sun, say 2-3 hours at a time 3-4 days a week.
My plan is to run a 1" line...

Other fish than Gold or Koi in Pond? by
BB
Besides the usual carp family of Goldfish and Koi, what other types of fish
have been successfully kept in an outdoor pond?
I would *really* like to try something like guppies but I jus' plain don't
know what would happen. I know guppies (and assorted tropicals) like
warmer water and will...

Barrel pond gone stagnant by
Colin Eberhardt
I recently purchased half an old barrel to create a pond. The barrel is
about 90cm in diameter. I originally stocked it with a few plants, some
oxygenating plants and added a small fountain.
However, within a few weeks the water started to smell. I also noticed
a number of small grubs in the water...

pearlscale goldfish questions and help request by
Lisa
Hello All! This is my first time here!
As a retirement project my husband and I will be building an indoor
pond in the kitchen which should be 10' x 6' x 2' to house oxygenating
plants, ryukins, orandas, fantails and pearlscale goldfish. In the pet
stores where I live the quality of most of the...

Catfish crash by
[email protected]
This is my second experiment with catfish in my pond.
Two years ago I put in 25 and a pound of minnows and within a few weeks
they started appearing at the surface cruising around and shortly
later, floating dead. By the end of summer, they were all gone.
This year I only put in 12 and the...

Digging pond - dirt and grass by
[email protected]
My son has begun digging me a pond and without knowing better dug up
the grass and just threw it and the dirt to the side on top of existing
lawn (I had carefully removed the grass and composted it and then moved
the dirt elsewhere when I had dug my ponds). So my question is - has
anyone else just...

New pond by
AlecTPR
I've had a new pond that I've put in about 2 weeks now and it's about
time to put some fishes in it.
It's a 1000 litre item, 2 1/2 foot deep with a decent enough pump and
filter (and uv bit).
I'm probably going to just put goldfish in it, something hardy, but
I've had various suggestions.
Should...

feel sorry for the little worker ants by

Are dragonflies territorial? by

I was sitting out back at my (getting rather small, we haven't had much

them that hang out around here, green ones, blue ones, speckled ones, a
bunch of different kinds and sizes. Some of the green ones would...

Need pump & filter advice for small pond by
[email protected]
Last year I buried a 145 gallon hard shell pond (80" x 54" x 18" deep -
Tahoe model) and installed a Pondmaster 500 gph pump - box said it's
good for up to 10 1/2 feet lift. The pond is about 18" deep and I
stacked flagstone about 12" high to create a small waterfall. The pump
has a 3/4" output...
