Green Water by
Craig Brye
I'm just wondering what the consensus on what the cause of green water is now a days?
I've heard everything from too much Fe, too much Nitrates, too much NH4, etc. I don't have green water currently, but I did get it a lot when I first got into plants a few years ago. I really struggled back...

Tank Setup Procedure/Sequence (starting with no plants) by
[email protected]
I think I might be ready to put gravel, rocks, and driftwood in my 55G
tank this weekend, however, I still haven't finished the lighting yet,
so I can't put any plants in. So here's my question ... I know it's
best to start with a large number of plants when you first setup your
tank so that you...

vivarium ground cover by
IRR
Anyone have any suggestions for an attractive vivarium ground cover and/or
creeping vine? This is a very well lit, high humidity (90%+), high
temperature (80-85 deg. F) setup.

Hornwort dies - why? by
Ook
I setup a new tank, treated the water, dropped ph to about 7.1 or so, and
then let it sit for a few days. I put some honrwort in the tank, and within
24 hours most of the needles had fallen off. Temp is about 76-78. I've grown
hornwort in a similar tank before, and it grew like crazy. Any ideas...

generic equipment by
so238
Argh! People say no one really reads the aquaria.tech newsgroup, my post
there never got answered and here's the 2nd best place to repost...
Some of us know that much equipment packaged and marketed for us
aquarists is overpriced, and cheaper generic industrial/home DIY
versions are available....

gH 100 mg/l and kH 80 mg/l for plants??? by
Steverd
Just tested my tap water and get: gH 100 mg/l and kH 80 mg/l
Using a Hagen test kit.
Alk 2.2
PH??? One test kit said 8.0 and another 7.2 - arghh?
Will this be too high for a planted tank?
My plan is a 50 gal tank.

Hair/Beard Algae by
cabaloz
I've been fighting a losing battle with hair/beard on my plants and black
brush algae on a piece of driftwood.
Tank is 130 litres, my nitrates are always within 5-10 mg/l, tested every
2-3 days, regular (every 7 days) 25% water changes, thorough and deep
vacuuming of the substrate and reasonably...

Had an interesting idea for a filter by
RadCliffe
I had this idea for a filter for a fish tank, I dont know if it has ever
been done before, but here was what i was thinking.
Basicly it combines an undergravel filter and a regular powered filter.
But my idea was to build a regular powered filter into two sections one
that went directly into the...

DIY CO2 system-makes my fish sink? by
Matt C.
HI all- Newbie to this group here
I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank and i just spent about 2 1/2 weeks
planting the tank. I installed a 1 liter DIY CO2 system yesterday and I
noticed last night at about 11pm, that it was bubbling nicely through a
microfine airstone located at the bottom of the...

Nitrates and Phosphates out of control by
Allyb
I'm having a hard time in my tank with algae, I believe due to the fact that
I can't get my nitrate and phosphate levels right. I hope someone has some
advice, or can tell me if I'm doing the right thing and just need to be
patient.
I have a 55 gallon tank. First, I have very high levels of...

Tank hood cleaning question by
Royal
I have a 46 gallon with a glass hood. Over the past 8 months I've
noticed that the hood has accumulated some mineral deposits, mainly
near where my airstones bubble air up the surface. I'm guessing it's
because of water splashing onto the glass, evaporating, and then
leaving the minerals behind. ...

name that bug by
asta
Hello RAFP,
Could anyone please advise on these "bugs" that have
shown up in my tanks? They are about the size of a poppy
seed, shaped like a football, and they cruise about in an
upright position. They seem to be eating the leaves of
plants, leaves that are alive in the case of H....

Group FAQ and guidelines? by
Flatspin
Is there a FAQ and Guidelines online somewhere? I've been trying to
post a question with a small JPEG, looking for plant ID help. Despite
numerous attempts to post, the post never appears so I can only assume
I'm either blacklisted or my post violates guidelines somewhere.

Preventing backflow in DIY CO2 by
Curtis Thetford
I am contemplating the use of a DIY CO2 system and it looks like there are
three major types of disasters that occur. Exploding bottles, sucking yeast
into the tank and siphoning the tank dry. To deal with the last two
problems, it looks like a bubble counter in a jar is often used. I'm not...

reason that this won't work? I am considering supplementing them...
