simple pond for box turtles? by
john
I have an enclosure in my yard with several box turtles. I want to
upgrade from water dishes to a small pondish setup.
I have approx a 5'x5' area to work with. Box turtles like to soak, not
swim, so it shouldn't be too deep, at least in some places. They also
like to defecate in the water, so it...

Preventing string algae and pond de-icers by

Well winter is over here in Montreal and the ice is almost gone from my
small ~800gal pond. I have a few questions to ask before I start cleaning
it out and reintroducing my goldfish. This will be my 3rd season with a pond
and for the past two years I have managed to control the suspended...

Pond Vacuum by
Mike C
I saw this vacuum for pools/ponds on the Hammcher Schlemer website. It
hooks to your hose and uses the hose to create a vacuum to collect
debris into a bag. I was wondering if anyone had one and how it
worked. It would be nice ot be able to clean the pond of debris without
draining. I think the...

Hawk went fishing in my pond yesterday by
Mike Patterson
Glanced out the window yesterday just as a red-tailed hawk landed on
my back fence.
It looked around a bit, very interested in the pond, then suddenly it
swooped down and hit the water with it's talons, apparently missed
what it was aiming for, as it's talons were empty as it overshot and
landed...

what are you going to try, do, new in the pond this year by
kathy
Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the continuing
attacks so thought I'd create a new topic.
What are you going to try new in the pond this
year?
A new plant, make a veggie filter, build a bog,
try a different kind of fish, add a turtle, repel
invaders, or build a new pond or container water
garden?

How to maintain old pond filter with no drains? by
I.Sheldon
A couple of years ago I moved in to a UK house with a pond approx 16ft
x 10ft x 3ft, complete with no instructions.
The water flows from the pond via a side-pipe (a few inches from the
floor) in to the adjacent filter area, where it's pumped back to the
pond using an argonaut J75 0.5hp external...

Mysterious appearance of newbie by
George
Hi all. Well, I was feeding my fish today and noticed that there was a little
munchkin lurking about in the mid-level of the pond. I kneeled down to get a
closer look and discovered that it is a goldfish (just now starting to change
color from its baby black) fingerling about 1 1/2 - 2 inches...

not OT, Atlantis sunk by
kathy
Yesterday it was time to add water to the pond.
Well, the new water floated the island container
off its pedestal and it gently sank to the bottom
of the pond.
I reported the sinking to Jan and she christened
the island 'Atlantis'.
So there Atlantis sits. on the bottom of the pond.

Tomcat scaring fish? by
Elaine T
I have a black tomcat that comes to drink from the pond. Now the
shubies in that barrel never come to the surface when I'm there. When I
first got them, they played in the filter outflow and were always
cruising the duckweed hunting for food. Now I put food in and it
disappears only after I walk...

Name of Black/Dark Algae on side of pond? by
Phyllis and Jim Hurley
Our cement pond runs a steady coat of dark black/bule algae that nicely
hides all colors. People have named it from time to time. Can anyone
help us out?
Thanks

Pump and filters by
Haymish Pupkin
Hi all
I'm new to group and have a few questions about pumps and filters.
I will be using a clarke hippo 2 pump (which I have used before, cheap and
cheerful) on my 6 meter high waterfall. This pump has a max flow rate of 85
L/Min. With this in mind I was looking to match the pump with a...

skippy filter, portable bottom drain by
nortyler
I have a 3500 gph pump, with a strainer, I am using in a new pond. I am
going to avoid a skimmer as I will have a large amount of floating
plant material.
1. Build a skippy or just buy a filterfalls? I am wondering how big a
skippy is needed to handle 3500 gph flow.
2. How much more efficient...

Painting a pool with concrete showing through the plaster by
EdS
I just bought a house with a pool and would like to get it ready for
summer. I drained it for painting and am now concerned about several
eight inch patches of concrete where the plaster is worn completely
away.
Can I get away with just painting over the concrete or do I need to
patch these...

HRH The Lady Bullfrog/Atlantis by
kathy
Her Royal Highness, The Lady Bullfrog is back for
her third summer.
And she gets to stay. She is smarter than two teenage
boys with nets, she is smarter than two lazy labradors
and she's going to help me keep the pacific chorus frogs
from getting out of control and annoying the neighbors.
So. She...
