Poll: What are your temps today? by Bill Stock
I took the pond temp today (1 PMish) , because I was concerned about it being too cold to feed the fish. Turned out to be 54F near the top of the pond. I'm in zone 5b in Southern Ontario.

Floating fountain update by Roy
Still waiting for the Linzea submersible pump to get here, but I have the float and fountain head support tube already made, and I conducted some experiments on the float to see if it will hold up the submersible pump. The pump weights in at 11.5 pounds. I have weights from an exercise machine that...

Just curious but how full do you fill preforms ........... by Roy
While I only ever had a few instances of a fish jumping out of a preform (wifes 1/2 barrel) I certaily don;t want to have it happen again if possible. They have not shown any signs of trying to jump out since. I am in the process of removing the small little preform that is by the large pond and...

Just when you think you have the fish outsmarted, they manage to outwit you by Roy
I have a nice light yellow butterfly koi in my wifes 1/2 barrel, along with 2 shubunkins. These fish are ravenous plant eaters. I can feed them constantly, and they will still devour all the roots off plants, and gobble up duckweed and fairy moss at an alarming rate. I liked having frog bit in this...

Water jet features by SkyCatcher
Hi, I would like to create a water jet feature in my pond. The sort of thing that sqirts water in an arc over 10ftfor about 2 seconds and then one from the other side does the same. Then these repeat. Can anyone suggest how (or where to buy) I would go about this? I'm UK based btw.

Hi, I am facing a problem recently and hope to find a solution to it ASAP. I have a big tank which can hold about 2 tonnes of water (meant for drinking. The tank is below ground level and no one has access to below ground level. The traditional method of measuring the water level is to put a dip...

Power to Your Pond by JB
I recently built a new 3,000 gallon pond. I'm currently operating my pump (OASE Auquamax 3700) with an extension cord plugged into a GFI outlet on my back porch to an outdoor 3 outlet power stake that I've used in the past for Christmas lights. Obviously I need to do something more permanent. I...

Goldfish behavior in outdoor pond by Dan
Hi, I have recently moved into a new place in san diego with an empty fish pond (6 x 4). I filled it up and put a few water plants in it. They did great. Three weeks later, I put in some small comet goldfish. They appear to be doing fine. BUT, I have noticed at times they are at the surface not...

Rice as an aquatic plant? by Roy
Has anyone planted or used rice for an aquatic plant.........I was thinking of planting some along the edges of my pond as a substitute for cat tails etc, just to see how it looked and propagated. Visit my website: http://www.frugalmachinist.com Opinions expressed are those of my wife, I had no...

Tadpoles by Bonnie
Today I cleaned out the small veggie filter. It was loaded with tadpoles. Will they be bullfrogs. Or do other frogs take two seasons to mature? There sure were a passel of them. -- Bonnie NJ

Water shutoff switch wiring by Rob
I ordered a Little Giant automatic water shutoff switch. Anyone use one of these? I'm supposed to plug my pump into it's plug, which in turn plugs into my GFI outlet. Question is: with all that plugginess, how am I supposed to close the cover on my GFI to keep the rain out? It won't all...

Ping Ingrid by Bill Stock
Ingrid, Did you 500w heater run full time last winter? I noticed that you said you had 1600 gallons, about half of which was above ground. Yet your 500w heater managed to keep the pond above 50F, except for two months. I bought a 300w heater, as my pond is less than 500 gallons and...

Lotus Question by Heather
New Lotus this summer. The lotus leaves are starting to curl and look old. Is it time to cut them back and put it in the garage? The lotus tub is way too large to drop in the pond. Or just move it and leave the leaves be? Will frost hurt it provided the roots haven't frozen? SW Ontario - nights...
