new pond by
Ann in Houston
Thanks for the tips and answers on my question about paint. The reason for
my reappearance here, is that we finally put in the new pond to improve the
drawbacks to the big pond that was losing the green water battle. It was
too full of koi to keep any lilies or anacharis going. They chewed up...

Q: How to overwinter Taro? by
Lt. Kizhe Catson
It'll be frost-time fairly soon here (Ottawa), so I'm planning what to
do. In past years I've kept my Black Magic Taro awake, in a small
aquarium under grow-bulbs (interesting factoid: the deep dusky colour
only appears under sunlight; under artificial light the leaves are
dark green with only the...

Winterizing - Again by
Bill Stock
I'm going to leave the fishes in the pond this year, as their indoor cousins
are maxing out my tanks.
So the plan is to leave the pump going beneath the surface (1') and put one
of the 100 watt heaters within a couple of feet of the pump. I'm also
tempted to cover the pond with 2" of stryofoam...

Suggestions hauling koi home by
Roy
Was offered quite a few (30 to 40 estimate on quanity in pond) koi
that was in a pond on the property of this persons house they just
bought. Its a small pond, above ground, but a lot of the koi are huge
18" plus and there is also a bunch of various other sizes as well. All
this is in a pond of...

OT Yellowjacket Shop Vac by
Cam
My back yard is swarmed with yellowjacket wasps every August and
September. It can make it tough to sit by the pond with a drink or eat
dinner on the deck. They are attracted by the flowering silverlace
vines on the fence and deck railing. I have set traps for them, put out
borax ant-bait and...

question about sludge eaters by
Ann in Houston
Do these products eat away at algae trapped in a gravel bog filter. If so,
what is the best brand? We just built a new one, and there's lots of algae
on the gravel as it starts to clear up the pond. Don't know what effect the
taro and iris will have. That's all I had on hand to put in there, so...

Keeping lilypads over winter?? by
Pepperqueen
Hello!
I have a preformed pond (220gals) I will in Southern, Ontario, Canada. I'd
like to know, if I should take my lilypad out of my pond, bring it inside
over the winter months? Or will it grow new pads in the spring?
I do have to take out all of my goldfish and put into an aquarium, as...

Free skippy-capable 20 gallon tub in North Fort Worth by
John
It was my skippy filter. Had it sitting beside the pond. It worked, so I
bought another tub to put into the waterfall, and transfered the contents
from the old tub to the new.
In so doing I discovered that the tub expands a few gallons after it is
filled, dropping the water level in the pond. ...

Super clear water by
bk
I had auful green water, I mean really bad thick looking green water.
I now how about 15 african cichlids in about 1200 gallons.
700gph pump to tetra canister filter.
I think it the activated charcoal that cleared things up.
I used a half gallon size container. Folks told me that I needed 20...

Duck Pond by
Charles Samardza
From what I've been reading this may be an unusual question.
I am a volunteer with an facility that is careing for some
non-releasable bird. Among these are 2 ducks. They have a
small(garden type) pond available to them, I'd estimate between 150
and 200 gallons. It is getting dirty quite fast...

Electricity by
GdeStOmar
I have made a small pond for a turtle. I'm wondering if anyone has a
technique for connecting electricity in the outdoors. I'm concerned
about moisture getting into the connection as I had a problem with an
aquarium filter splattering on a connection and causing a tickling
sensation in my hands...

Looking for Ponders in MD, DE and NJ for Pond Book by
Benign Vanilla
Hey gang,
I am currently working on a project to create a coffee table style pond
book. The details of the layout and such are still being refined, so I'd
rather not share them yet. We are still evaluating whether this is a viable
project or not, and we decided the first step would be to see if we...

Injury or disease? by
W Dale
As my water is getting a little clearer day by day, I can now see 25 of
my little fish. Today, while sitting out by the pond having a cup of
"Morning Thunder", I noticed one of my koi has what appears to be puffy
lips. None of the other fish seem afflicted. Does anyone know what
this condition...

Newbie question about bringing fish into aquarium by
Grandpa
I started my first pond and live in Canada. The leaves are dropping fast
and soon it will be well below freezing. My pond is about 1.5 meters deep,
but that will freeze solid by mid November here. I have a 75 gallon tank
which I hope will hold my first year fish consisting of 3 gold fish and...

Water Hibiscus by
Karen
This is the first year I've had a water hibiscus. Currently it is in the hole
of a concrete block and did very well. Question is, does it stay there over
winter or should I drop it below the freeze line.
Same question for water mint, leave it where it's growing now or sink it?
Thanks
Karen

Pond Defection by
2pods
Owing to a bit of good luck, me and most of the fish are defecting from the
small raised pond to the nice new Juwel Rio 400 tank for the winter :-)
Mind you, I won't be able to do this when they're bigger !

Getting Ready for Winter by
Benign Vanilla
Anyone else thinking about it?
I am in MD, near Baltimore. It's been too cold to swim for weeks now, so the
pool is getting closed this weekend. I was thinking of moving my filter
plants to the main pond, so I could drain, and clean the filter. I figure
then I can let the stream dry up so I can...

Evaporation Concern by
Steve Shapson
I have a question about pond/stream evaporation for any seasoned pond owners
out there.
My pond is about 23'x23'x24 inches deep with a 63 foot stream. The width of
the water in the stream is about 14 inches. The stream bed is small river
pebbles.
Temps have been in the 70-80's in the day and 50's...

newts and salamanders in the pond guesses by
Ka30P
I'm just guessing but I'm assuming that a garden pond
keeper is more likely to find frogs and toads in the pond
rather than newts and salamanders.
And I'm thinking that newts and salamanders are more prevalent in suburbs that
are more woodland in feel, where by design or happy accident, there are...
