New free water plant by
~ jan JJsPond.us
This evening I noticed on my water fall rocks something that was making the
waterfall bounce up before flowing over. Figuring it was just the usual
algae I pulled off a clump. It wasn't algae but something that is almost
fern or moss like, very cool looking, dark green, with a root structure. I
put...

filter cleaning by
k conover
Just wondering if there was a general rule of thumb for how often to clean
out the pond filter. I've got a very simple pump immersed in a box that
has a bio filter (net bag filled with things that look like dish scrubbies
and plastic hair curlers in it), topped by a square 1" thick spongy pad...

Eggs, Fish and Frogs by
Pam Gibbs
Okay, the eggs on the plants in the kiddy pool apparently are two different
things. Some of them look just like baby guppies, so I am guessing they are
some kind of fish. They swim like fish. They are greyish and well, they
look like guppies to me. I called the farm store and they said some...

Need Head Examined by
pixi
It is too late now but I wish I hadn't done it. I tried to fix the leak by
removing the flange or face plate and regluging the liner. Oh, what fun.
I had more trouble lining up the holes in the face plate, the holes in the
liner and the screw holed in the skimmer. Took me more than a day. ...

Some Water Lettuce, some Water Hyacinth, some Duckweed, 4 lilies, some
Mare's Tail, some Anacharis, some Myriophyllum. Little by little, work
continues and plants are added often and the water is green. Work
continues on the Flour Mill ( need to find some wood shake, unpopular in
So. Ca. ), and...

Blanketweed by
Jim
Had a stone waterfall put in about 9 months ago and this year has been an
absolute nightmare for blanketweed. Always had it but never this bad.
Waterfall gets covered in it and no matter how thoroughly I clean waterfall
and pond it's back within a couple of weeks.
I have used chemicals to treat...

Mosquito issue in standing pots. by
Carl Beyer
I have a small pond that is overgrowing. I have pulled of the plants
out and put in pots to await veggie filter or additional pond
(addictions suck).
But I am seeing larva in the pots. I put a couple of mosquito fish in
them, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. The GF suggests...

Where to get potassium permanganate, and will it hurt frog eggs? by
Pam Gibbs
So where do I get this stuff to treat the platnts? Didn't see anything at
Lowes or Home Depot. The aquarium store maybe?
Got up this morning and found frog eggs all over everything in the kiddy
pool where I put the new plants to quarantine them and pick the snails off.
I saw two little brownish...

snails by
Kay

and it seems as if some posters feel that snails are danggerious to
their goldfish. Basically buying plants and the snails on the plants
having diseases. what my question here is, how many people here have had
a fish get sick...

Leeches by
2pods
I've seen "proper" leeches before in natural ponds, marshes etc.
However, when buying some oxygenators for our small pond, I noticed what
looked like a small transparent leech.
I *thought* I'd hosed it off the plants before the went in, but today there
were three hiding in the folds of the...

Trapdoor snails making an escape by
Paul DeWolf
Hi all,
My wife reports that this morning she found three of our trapdoor snails on
our lawn instead of the pond. Unfortunately, she found one of them by
running it over with a bicycle.
Does anyone know why they might be wandering? We've had the pond for a few
years now and they haven't done...
