tree frog egg report by
really ka30p
Report on eggs from jj's pond.
I started eggs in a tub on my deck and inside
in a glass jar on my windowsill from the same batch.
Windowsill taddies hatched first.
But now tub taddies are twice the size of indoor
taddies.
Indoor taddies have warmer water.
Outdoor taddies have more sun.
Both have...

Plants for a small pond with waterfall. by
Raj
Hi folks,
I need some suggestions for a small pond I inherited with the house in
Northern NJ. It is roughtly 5x4 with severly rounded corners (to the
point that it is neither circular nor square), about 3' deep at the
center. There are no shelves for marginal plants. It has a about 7'
high...

Fertilizer and ponds . . . by
seed lover
Now I know that it's a no-no to allow drainage from surrounding
landscape to contaminate a pond, due to the risk of accummulated
fertilizer and chemicals.
However, this is a different question:
I have plants in pots that come from a lake-margins environment and
which live in nature with their...

mosquito dunks safe? by
Lydia
There's a bunch of mosquito larvae in my water garden. I would like to try
using a mosquito dunk, but am concerned that it will harm the other things
in the pond such as snails and tadpoles.
Are mosquito dunks safe to all the other life in the pond? Any draw backs
to using dunks?
Thanks,
Lydia

tile adhesive in pond by
Mark Bannister
New to rec.ponds. Hello all.
We are installing a cinder block pond as I type this. It will be sealed
with Hecht Rubber EPDM sealer. My wife found some granite tile on sale
and wants to line the inside with the tile. Hecht says normal tile
adhesive will work against their sealer.
Does anybody...

Beginner luck ? by
seed lover
Hi all,
This is my second post here, and is connected to my "salt in pond"
post I just submitted.
Background: I've had a 400 gallon pond stocked with Koi and goldfish
for over a year, and everything has gone fantastic. Good water
quality, happy, tame fish. I guess it was beginners' luck . ....

Water still brown ? by
Folklore
I have a 500g pond in MN. Ice has been off of it for about 3 or 4
weeks now, 3 shebunkin are swimming around (when I can see them) and
today I yanked out the bottom filter/bubbler that I use during the
winter and started up the skimmer. The water is still really brown.
It seems that most years...

A total newbie asks for help by
Josh Fruhlinger
Hello there rec.ponders:
I am a not-so-handy man who has promised a simple backyard pond to his
girlfriend for her birthday and, upon doing more research, is feeling a
bit over his head. Our backyard is quite small and mostly paved with
brick -- more a courtyard, really. Right now we have a...

fish with disease by
Steele family
Hello there,
Just noticed a problem with 4 or 5 of our fish. We have about 20 fish
altogether in our pond. They are mixed colours ranging from plain gold,
plain white/cream, plain black and a mix of these colours.
The problem seems to be with the plain gold fish. They have creamy white
lumps on...

Larvae Identification by
stricks760
I saw some little creatures in my pond yesterday, on the waterfall wiers.
When I got close, they 'swam' up stream and disappeared.
I managed to grab one, and looked at it under a magnifying glass. It looked
like a little tiny drafonfly, but with no wings (it was about 1/16th of an
inch long). ...

Golden Orfe / Bluegills? by
Glenn Lynn
I have Goldfish. Calico Shubunkins and Rosey Reds. They all act so
differently and are fun to watch. I have considered adding Golden
Orfes but am not sure if I have enough room for them to "cruise" in.
My main pond is 6' x 16' and from 1' to 4' deep. Is this enough space
for their acrobatic...

Muddy Water by
Steve and Lisa
We just put in a new pond Saturday. The past two days it's been raining and
silt had gotten into the pond. (We put stones around it and didn't even
think to rinse them all off). Will it all settle (still raining as of the
moment) or will we have to do something else to clear it all up.

Bottom Drain Thought by
Mark and Kim Smith
Newbie here. Been lurking a while and I now have a question. I'm in
the middle of building a 2500 gal. or so pond.
I've been thinking of a DIY skimmer with the bottom drain connected to
it at a low point. The skimmer would be a series of chambers ( with
baskets to catch the big stuff. ) ...

Pond Foam by
Charles
I had an experience with foam building up on the pond where the water
from the filter returns via a small stream like feature. Foam would
be as much as 4 inches high and would appear in the morning, to
dissipate during the day.
I thought it might just be from DOC, so I put in a small bad...

Koi color by
pmwebdesigns
Can a Koi lose color if stressed?
I bought a Koi, a little black n white butterfly one, and when I got home
and took him out the bag he almost looked silver, hardly no black at all.
I'm beginning to wonder if the guy caught the right Koi, but I know the guy
knew which one I wanted.
