SWM seeks LCF (Large Carnivorous Fish)? by Monty Burns
Enter the stereotypical question : I want a big fish for a big pond, that will eat small mammal carcasses / meat scraps / other fish. (I've searched via Google, but can't find the answer) -- I've got a pond full of goldfish, and although they're pretty, they're not terribly entertaining. I've...

Koi Breeding by Chad
Over the summer I found a site that had a "Breeding Chart" that showed an approximate distriubtion of the breeds of babies you would get when breeding koi. i.e. Kohaku with a Sanke could result in offspring of 40% Kohaku, as many as 20% Sanke or Showa, and 10% Shiro Bekko. The other 30% could be...

Goldfish frozen in ice! by Robyn Rhudy
I spent 2 hours yesterday scooping 10" of snow off the sides of my pond in hopes I can get the net off in a few days if it warms up. This morning I looked down over my pump area and saw a huge goldfish. The poor girl was frozen in the ice, solid! I am so mad. If I had gotten the net off sooner,...

Having Problems with Fairy Shrimp Eating Water Lilies by Ilene
Aloha! My tropical water lily leaves are being attacked by what looks like fairy shrimp. My plants are in various sized plastic tubs, some with guppies and others with just mosquito dunk. Some of my tubs have zillions of those cute amphipods? I caught them working in mass, munching on new leaves at...

To feed or not to feed by William Oertell
Hi all. I just found this newsgroup, and being the owner of a relatively new pond, look forward to participating in it for awhile. My question, we have a 1,000 gal pond with about 11 goldfish in it. (We stocked 12 but one didn't make the transition). We live in Roseville, which is just outside...

Ciclids & Platys by Lynn Strickland
Hi - I've heard of people putting Ciclids and/or Platy's in thier ponds. Anyone know what the liveable temperature range is for these guys? Would they get along with small Koi (about 5-6" long)? I'm in zone 10b, water temp right now is about 50 deg F. I doubt it will get much below 45 degrees...

Making a pond from a gully by DelawareDave
First, I'm new to this group. If this post is better placed somewhere else, please let me know. I have a "V" shaped gully in my slightly sloped wooded backyard with an apparent VERY SMALL spring of constant water running through the bottom of it. I'd like to "dam-up" this gully and make a pond -...

OT why men lie by Ken Arnold
WHY MEN LIE ! One day, while a woodcutter was cutting a branch of a tree above a river, his axe fell into the river. When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "Why are you crying?" The woodcutter replied that his axe has fallen into the water, and he needed the axe to make his living. The...

Shubunkin Turned White! by Judi9000
Last year I bought 2 really pretty, colorful shubunkins. One of them is now a pinkish-white. All of my fish have changed some in the 4 years that I've had ponds, but none as drastic as this. Is this normal?

Pond Evaporation by RED1102
Does anyone else have a problem with the water in their pond evaporating this time of year. I live in Northern, NJ and have noticed that the water seems to be evaporating more this year. I hope that's what it is & not a hole in my liner :o(. My pond is about 700 gallons. Carole

Increase Waterfall Flow? How about Pondmaster Waterfall Pumps? by Runner
Howdy, all. This is my first post to this newsgroup. I have done a little searching and have not found an answer. Basically, I am interested in your opinions on the Pondmaster Waterfall pumps -- specifically the WFP2500. Generally, I am interested in you opinions on my present system and how I...

Leaves on the bottom, letting them be by ~ jan JJsPond.us
For those of you who think leaving a few leaves on the bottom is no big deal. Well today I was doing some vaccing of the last of the leaves to blow in when I upturned a bucket that had a few leaves and rain water, it had been sitting like that since the leaves started falling (about a month). Talk...

Keeps out more than leaves! by Hank
It seems like the netting on the pond keeps out more than leaves. http://www.geocities.com/hankpagel/netting.html I think it was more interested in the birds at the feeders, but it did watch the fish as they swam by.

Aquarium heater in pond by EliezerE
