Question on salt by
[email protected]
Within the next week or so, I expect to be ready to fill our new pond.
We have a well, and the water is rusty unless it goes through a water
softner. I don't think there's enough salt from the softner to hurt
the fish (although I'm not sure), but I wonder if there is reason to
be concerned with the...

Newbie's Pond by
Debbie
Well I admit that I have been a lurker for over a year now. I have learned a
great deal from all of the folks here and have finally (after reading the
post that contained the Webshots link) gotten brave enough to post some
pictures.
We had a small pond at our old house - probably around 500...

Pond Lighting by
Anne Lurie
I don't know if there are any ideas at
http://www.kissingfrogs.tv/morepond.html that will be of actual help to you,
but it's a fascinating description of a rather incredible glass brick pond
(actually glass brick around a pond structure).

Will small koi grow quicker if brought indoors over winter and kept in
indoor pond rather than leaving outside in a zone 5 pond?

Filter media: strapping tape VS PE sheeting VS... by
Andrew Burgess
I found some polypropylene strapping tape at
http://www.uline.com/ProductDetail.asp?model=S-375
and it's about 27 cents per square foot, figuring
both sides, ignoring shipping. I've heard it mentioned
here and people were happy with it.
Long ago on a pond tour I saw someone using...

Rosey reds vs. baby bass by
Sam Hopkins
Well my 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,003 rosey reds are down to
about 2,000 after my baby bass found out that they were good eating. One
bass nearly beached himself sucking them down.
In one area I saw two baby bass (about 5 inches long) swim past me and a
group of bluegill spawning....

Frog Eggs? by
BenignVanilla
I went back to the pond this evening and was checking out the action. The VF
is nearly void of plants as I am working on it this weekend. In one of the
clear spots, I found what I think are frog eggs.
What should I do?

Sponge for filter in stream by
Mickey
Does anyone know a type of sponge that can be bought in 12" wide x 16" deep
x 12" thick pieces. I am looking for the stuff used in aquariums by
companies like Fluval. I am looking for mechanical filtration to put in my
stream. I looked at polyfill batting but I don't think you can clean it.

Strange goldfish behaviour by
Weldon Wallick
This morning I found one of my shebunkins doing something strange.
It is about six inches long including long tail.
It stays in one end of my small preformed pond with it's head down.
Every now and then it races around and then comes back and does the
head down routine. I suspect I will lose him....

do I need a bottom drain? by

1) Does remnant carpet or carpet padding work ok for cushioning the liner?
You can buy padding that is not too expensive and won't rot away.
2) Can I put old carpet for cushion on the bottom too or is that only for
the sides and I must use sand on the bottom?
I just used...

Mistakes are the Father of Invention by
Benign Vanilla
OK, so if you have been following the SHP VF fiasco, you know that I built a
wall to break the VF up into two halves so that I could build the water
level up and hide more liner. That worked but too well. I have lost about
6-8 inches of water each day that it has been up. So, k30a, you got...
