Need some info about a water source by
ssalapek
My husband and I dug a pond this weekend it's about 20ft x 15ft and
around 4 to 5 ft deep. We put a liner in and now we are not sure what
to do about to water supply. Do you have to have a constent flow of
freshwater to prevent it from becoming stagnent. I don't think there
is a spring around...

backyard fiasco by
[email protected]
I have a pond in my yard probably 250 gallons. It has 9 big gold fish
in it from the previous owner. Without fail every year about this time,
I've been told due to heat and sunshine, the pond gets really nasty.
What should I use to keep it clear and clean?

Hi everyone (except the smut peddlers) First, I have never had a pond and

selecting a filter. I have decided on a uv filter and would like some help
deciding between Sunterra, Fishmate, and Cyprio. Any and all opinions would

In pond pump input cover... any ideas? by
Gareee©
I've been using the "milk crate" type filter around the pump in the pond,
but it seems to be getting clogged to the point o restricting water flow in
just a week with the new higher pgh pump.
Anyone come out with some kind of "cage" to put around the pump, to keep
critters like salamanders out,...

Hardy Pond Lilly Propagation by
Chester Deja
I planted my Pond lillys last year in large 1' diameter pots. I
fertilized them and it appears that they are all roots now and filling
the pots. How and when should I propagate them? I would prefer to do
it soon because I prefer not to go swimming next spring (brrrr). I
also need to know how to...

Just thought I'd ask that posters remember that this group is nationwide,
not just American/Canadian. Replies to posts should bear this in mind, as I
don't have a Walmart in Kent, UK ;)

New... Need Help Getting Plants Started... by
brendonanderinc
My husband and I have just started a pond, and we need a little help
with the basics. We'd like to get some plants started. We have
several potted lillies that seem to being doing well, but we'd like to
add some oxygenators.
We tried some bundles of parrot's feather. They were floating at...

Sick fish: advice? by
Joan
We noticed today that one of our goldfish in our outdoor pond is
looking lethargic and not schooling with the other fish.
Her abdomen looks enlarged but there is no "pineconing" of the fins.
She is hanging in the water with her head pointed partly downward, and
swimming weakly. There is a red...

sick fish ...help please by
HI All
My favorite and oldest fish seems to be sick. Plucked out of the feeder tank
almost 10 years ago she (maybe) is a beautiful white and gold longer tail
goldfish.I noticed she was looking a bit rounder about a week ago and
thought perhaps it was getting near spawning time and didn't really...

Dragonflies by
~ janj
During the work week I don't always check the lily pond. Today discovered
it must have been the week of dragonflies. Several empty nymph-cases on
iris stems and bricks. ~ jan

Best Pond Shops by
David Sim
I saw a reply to a post this morning mentioning Maidenhead Aquatics - a
chain of 20 or so pond / aquatic shops in the UK. For what it's worth, they
get my vote for the best I've come across, with special mention to Big John
in their Henley-on-Thames branch, he really knows his stuff. Always...

2 baby koi, 1 baby plant by
~ janj
My surprises this week:
I found 2 small koi (~3") in the upper pond. I thought I had a couple
little ones in there before winter came, but didn't see them when I took
the screens off this spring. Discovered them still hiding in the same place
under a plant basket. I've been tossing some sinking...

string algae (again) by
pete
I have two small water gardens, one approximately 250 gallons, the other
about 80 gallons. The larger of the two has crystal-clear water, with
absolutely no string algae to speak of. The smaller pond is another matter;
it is infested with string algae, which seems to be growing exponentially.
I...

Hardy lily kit by
CanadianCowboy©
I ordered a couple of hardy lilies online and when they arrived they
were one of those encased in coconut fur in a plastic casing. The
instructions say to just float it in the water and watch them grow.
Is it that easy ? Should I see sprouting from the top ?
These are my first lilies so sorry for...

koi making mess in pond by
[email protected]
We have large kidney shaped pond in the country. We were told the koi
would clean up the greens. Well the pond is so muddy that we can't
even see the fish. 5 of our 22 inch bass died last year. They were
like our kids pets and anyone fishing enjoyed catching them. I think
it through the oxygen...

Anyone build their own leaf traps? by
TNutZz
I have an external pump that I'm going to use for my pond; I need to
install a leaf trap on the intake side. I have looked at the
commercially available ones and they look like pretty simple devices.
Has anyone here built their own?

using carpet to line a pond by
seneca
I'm about to install a pond and have heard that some people use a
special fabric layer on the soil, before they put the liner down.
Apparently it stops little stones sticking through. I just happen to
have a load of oold carpet and the underlay that I have taken out of
the house when a wooden flor...

Duckweed by

Help ! First timer on this group, with a problem - Duckweed. I have never
knowingly introduced it to my pond, but now it is taking over, and the three
fish are no longer seen (Ghost Carp and goldfish). What ferocious fish can I
introduce to devour the duckweed ? (But not the other fish.
