water Lillies by CanadianCowboy©
OK ...I am tired of my friends and family telling me why I don't have water lilies in my pond so I am hoping someone will help me out. I live in Canada (zone 5) so I didn't want the hassle of caring for these in the winter. What options do I have ? Buy them every year , put them in my garage...

Damned Snakes III Revenge of the snakes! by Gareee©
Well, I was going to the store the other day, and saw something on a bit down the hill. I headed down there, and I found 2 black rat snakes about 4 ft long (or more) mating! We managed to catch the larger one (hopefully the female), and dropped her off at our local snake dropoff lake. So far...

Repelling Bees by [email protected]
Here is a problem I have not seen on here... We live in Mesa Arizona and it gets quite hot. The past few summers we have had, as I am sure everyone has, bees coming to the waterfall to have a drink and take water back to the hive. Of course we did not mind. This year, however, there are upwards...

lonely shubunkin by mark Bannister
We have some fish in the pond only because a friend moved and begged us to take them. There a a few goldfish and one larger shubunkin. I think it's a shubunkin. I can't find anything else that it might be. Anyway the shubunkin is driving the other fish nuts. His favorite game is to take the fat...

Water parameters and String Algae by Bill Stock
The Algae is wild this year. I can pull it out by the handful everyday and the pond is only 500 gallons. I finally put a few Water Hyacinths in on the weekend, but they look a little off. So I tested the water tonight and Nitrates and Nitrites are ZERO, PH is 8.4, KH is 180 and GH is 75. I...

Why I shun the cheap way. by John Bachman
The one time I didn't shun the cheap way I messed up. I decided to fertilize my lilies with plain old 10-10-10. No need to buy those expensive pills, they are just 10-20-10, right? Lined up the pots with a piece of 3/4-inch PVC, poured some 10-10-10 into it and jabbed it home with plastic...

dallas area - excess koi and goldfish by Robin
I live in the Dallas/Plano area and my small water garden is over-running with koi and goldfish. I really need to get rid of them, and so I'm selling them for a token $2 each. The water garden is very overcrowded, and I'm not sure what else to do with all these fish. I just want them to go to...

kathy's friday report & welcome to rec.ponds :-) by kathy
Google is being difficult this morning. We had a snake visit last night. Along with its 11 year old friend, a neighbor boy from down the street. He wanted to know what kind of snake it was and if it was a rattlesnake, which we will get around here from time to time. It was a checkered garter...

First year pond anniversary by Robin
It's been about a year now since I put in my first pond. My mother's neighbor had bought a preform pond and small waterfall, a liner, a filter and a pump; but got a transfer to OH before installing it. I had just bought my first house, so he gave it all to me. The hardform ended up covering my...

frogs by amber
I just recently added green frog tadpoles to my pond. I was wondering what i can feed them and how long do they take to become adults? Also, when they become adults how can I encourage them to stay around my pond? Any advice would be a big help. Thanks!
