Diesels In England: Why ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
My son tells me that diesel cars are very, very popular in England.
Obviously they are not here.
a. If he's right, how come they are over there ?
b. What are the pros and cons of diesel vs gas ?
c. etc.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

Prestone Rather Than DesCool ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have a 2009 Buick LaCrosse.
Manual says to use DexCool for antifreeze.
I think it also says, somewhere, "only".
I see that the Prestone product(s) all say "for any car".
Safe to use Prestone, instead ?

Race Cars Tire Size: Rear Vs Front ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
My Grandson asked me the following question, and as I am not, frankly,
into auto technology I thought I would take the liberty of asking here.
"Why, so often, on many different types of race cars, are the rear
wheels so much bigger ?"
Didn't know what the right answer is.

Filling In Very Light Scratches ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have a relatively new Outback, and has received some "light" scratches
on the door panel, probably in parking lot.
Scratches are 2 to 3 inches long, and quite light (thin).
Nowhere where I would consider re-painting the panel for.
But, annoying.

New Battery And State Inspection Question, Please by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Had a new battery installed yesterday.
Today, I went for a state inspection sticker, and they told me that
they couldn't do the inspection due to the new battery.
Apparently, all the self-checks, etc. that the car does is not operable
when a new battery is installed. Said it "takes a few...

Tire Mileage ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hi,
I realize there are a zillion variables involved, but
typically what might one expect these days for decent mileage on a
brand name, "high quality" all-weather tire ?
Live in New England, so some snow in the winter.
Perhaps 2/3 of driving is on highway. Subaru Outback.

Gearshift Location by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Just curious:
Do any of the new family size sedans, or SUV's have as an option
(anymore) having the gearshift on the steering wheel column ?
Or has that totally gone away now ?
Any cars offer it ?

Asymmetrical Tire Question, Please by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Think I have a decent understanding of asymmetrical tires, and how
they must carefully be mounted with the appropriate (as marked) side
outwards.
Are asymmetrical tires ever (also) marked with a directional arrow, as
a normal directional tires would be ?
Or, is one or the other ?

Dexcool Labeled Antifreeze: Must Use ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have a 2009 Buick LaCrosse.
Have always used what they recommended for antifreeze; the "Dexcool"
labeled stuff.
And have gotten the 50-50 % pre-mixed.
Question: I see all the antifreeze from Prestone, and others, always
seem to say on the jug that it is "Approved and good for Any car".

Winter Tires ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have begun looking into winter tires for my son's 2005 Accord (6 cyl.)
He has finally come to the conclusion that all-weather types really
don't work out well in the winter up here in Boston, and he is now
willing to switch from the normal summer tires to a true, winter tire.
Nokian...

Hello,
Have a 2009 Buick.
Live in (cold) New England.
The filler-neck on the plastic radiator fill jug says to use
DexCool. I haven't looked, but I seem to remember that the manual does
also.
WalMart has 50-50 mixed Prestone anti freeze, but

Tire Definitions ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Having a bit of trouble with tire definitions.
In the "old days," there was something called a snow tire.
Big, deep lugs/threads. May, or may not, have studs, although the holes
for them was always there, if I remember correctly.
Are these generically the same as what is called a "Winter...

Bob[_53_]
Hi,
Will be bringing car in to have tires rotated, and thought it might be a
good idea to know something about this first:
Re TPMS and tire rotation:

taken off the rim to get at the sensor, and thus be able to move it to...

Hub Cap Replacement: Where ? by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Have a 2009 Buick LaCrosse.
Came with the standard wheels, which I imagine are termed "Alloy"
Just noticed that I lost the center part of one of them. This is the
small, somewhat round, center section that covers up the Nuts.
Not sure if the right term is "Hub Cap," as it's only the...

Nokian WR-G3 Tires: Opinions On, Please by
Bob[_53_]
Hello,
Live in New England.
Fair amount of Snow and ice during the winter, but nothing like, e.g.,
Northern Maine.
Considering the Nokian WR-G3 (shown on their site as "all-weather")
as a compromise, as I do not want to take on or off seasonally.
