used tire question by Edwin T.
Have always bought used tires for the older vehicles that ive ever owned. Mostly cheap and still the tires were functional and as long as the car drove decently, I never cared if they were used. However, nowadays many used tire places are telling me that the tires made for 14inch rims are rare,...

Broken dipstick - 2001 Nissan Sentra by iconlarry
I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra and when I went to check the oil (the engine was giving off an oil smell) the dipstick which seems to be ceramic, broke off at the top. I thought of an EZ-out, but I'm afraid it will disintegrate what's left. Any ideas on how to get the rest of the dipstick out? Larry

Odd leakdown test, good compression, advice needed by devnull
Hello, Helped some relatives find an inexpensive and good car, exhaust leak sound near the manifold or downpipe. Needed a timing belt. it smoked like the dickens off idle, and had a nasty clatter near #3. I figured it needed valve stem seals, maybe lifters, if it needed guides throw on a $150 used...

Brake fluid flush question by [email protected]
Today I was doing my every-2-year brake fluid flush on my BMW. I had finished with the two back wheels, and was starting on the front passenger side wheel, when I sheared off the bleed screw on the caliper DAMMIT! So, now, there's no part of it above the caliper housing as it sheared evenly at...

Front-end vibration by Jules[_2_]
The wife has a '97 Toyota Avalon (approx 160k miles) which is experiencing front-end vibration at certain speeds. It seems to come on gradually at 45mph, is bad at 55-65, but then tails off sharply above 65 (it can still be felt as a kind of faint 'surging' below 45 and above 65 - but only if you...

Replacing Ford '80 F250 Ignition Lock Without Key by Nehmo
I'm replacing the ignition lock on a 1980 Ford F250 Pickup. The keys are lost. I have the steering wheel off, and I'm at the point where I'm trying to remove the old lock. The instructions say I need a key, and to turn it to the Run position. I can't do that, of course. So what should I do? Just...

Help: Nissan Altima brake & battery light came on and can not jump up by [email protected]
Your alternator is toast. A new alternator will fix both problems. The brake light is sensing the drop in voltage, and once you have an alternator that puts out over 12.5-13 volts, the light will go off. I had the same problem in my 96 Altima. Mike

removing skunk odor by [email protected]
Hello: First time posting. The other evening, a baby skunk crossed my path as I was driving through town. I didn't want to hit the animal so I slowed right down to a stop. Well, for my efforts, the skunk sprayed the underside of the car & the smell permeated the entire interior. I took it...

96 Nissan Pathfinder - Missing/Hesitation/Bad Idle by Not Anyone We Know
Howdy folks. 96 Nissan Pathfinder. 3.3L V6 2WD. 151K on the odom. Three weeks ago started getting a real bad surging/poor acceleration problem. At a stop, the engine would idle poorly, and on acceleration, would be very sluggish, and then suddenly accelerate as if nothing was wrong. So, this...

Analysis of my used ATF (T-IV) after 25,000 miles in '06 Camry with U250E transmission by Built_Well
Here's a copy of the Blackstone Labs report on my factory fill of Toyota T-IV ATF with 25,000 miles on it (and 25,000 miles on the car). Both car and oil are 3.5 years old. I ordered a Total Acid Number (TAN) but didn't order a Total Base Number (TBN) since a couple people wrote elsewhere that...

Hybrid cars a safe buy? by John S.
Honestly though - the EPA mileage estimates of all cars tend to be higher what most people experience in the real world. It's unfair to single out hybrids for unrealistic published fuel economy. JS> The scale of error is very different. We are talking about erring on the high side 15 to 20 mpg...
