"Glowing" ex manifold on a 2.5L S-10 by [email protected]
It's a 91 2.5L TBI ... the rig became progressively sluggish until it would hardly move. Any throttle movement would stall the engine. And the exhaust manifold was red hot before I chose not to drive it! Towed it home ... checked for a leaking TBI - NO CHANGE. Dropped the exhaust pipe - NO...

"Heat Shields" On A 2005 Accord Problem by Bob[_53_]
Hello, Not too automotive sharp, so would be grateful for some advice on this. My son has a 2005 Honda Accord with 175K on it now. Dealership just told him that the "Heat Shield," and the "Rear Heat Shield" are 90 % gone. Guess there are apparently two heat shield in question ?

"Helper springs" on Astrovan? by Keep YerSpam
Hi all, I have a 92 Chev Astro w/ the single plastic leaf springs in the rear. I do some light hauling with it and it really squats when I put anything in the back. It's not like I'm putting 1000# in there, just some musical gear and a couple people and it looks like a dog squatting. Are...

"Jack rabbit" starts give best mileage by Misterbeets
I was reading in the Bosch Gasoline Engine Management book tips for improving fuel efficiency, and was surprised to see wide throttle acceleration recommended, at least up to 2000 RPM, when you are supposed to change gears. Exactly the opposite of what I grew up hearing. Anyone know the thinking...

"Lean Burn" OBD code on '98 F-150 by Steve
I just purchased (at auction) a '98 F-150 Super Cab w/5.4L, 4wd and automatic. 132K miles. Runs great and in excellent condition (aside from the "smoker" previous owner). Within a few miles I got a "Check Engine" light. Owners manual says to check OBD codes as soon as as possible. (still ok to...

"Lumpy" diesel engine at low throttle by Martin Underwood
My Peugeot 306 HDi (2 litre, high-pressure direct-injection diesel, manual transmission) has started to become a bit "lumpy" when I apply power or remove it. If I take my foot off the accelerator in order to brake, the car lurches slightly; if I put my foot back on the accelerator after...

"maintenance" mode on battery charger? by Calab
I've got a battery charger that can charge a battery between 2 and 15 amps. One of the features of this charger is a "maintenance" mode. When this does is sent short charging bursts to the battery. It's supposed to remove "sulfation". Is this something that I'd want to do regularly, or only as...

"new" engine doesn't start right? by Eric B.
Had a 1995 Mits. Galant 5-speed with 133K miles on it. A 2-year-old balancer belt slipped somehow, got underneath the timing belt, and the interference engine was trashed (valves bent, pistons damaged). A local garage with a good reputation found a used engine with 66K miles on it. They installed...

"No Safety Problem" -- Toyota accused of 'not being frank' by john
WASHINGTON -- When owners of Lexus sedans began reporting harrowing crashes involving stuck accelerator pedals in early 2007, Toyota told U.S. safety regulators there was no safety problem with its floor mats -- but it would send owners an orange warning sticker just to be sure. The flaw has since...

"Oil Service" by [email protected]
If a BMW says "Oil Service" and shows a red and yellow set of lights when you turn it on, does this mean the oil needs to be changed?

"Panic Alarm" In 2005 Honda Accord LX Going Off By Itrself: Why ? by Robert11
Hello: It's hard for me to bring back to the dealer, so thought I'd ask here first. Have a 2005 Accord LX, 6 Cyl. Every now and then, a few times a week, for no apparent reason, the "Panic Alarm" just goes off by itself. There is no additional burglar alarm installed; this is just the alarm that

"Poverty Caps" by \Harry Smith\
Hi, I've got a full set of Chevy heavy duty steel wheels. Car is 1994 9c1 but I believe the wheels were originally part of a truck rally package. Anyway does any one know of a source for plain chrome hubcaps like what they call "poverty caps" nowadays. I have seen ones that have the bowtie but want...

"Power" mirror question by Percival P. Cassidy[_2_]
I bought on eBay a mirror for my '02 300M that was described as a "power" mirror that "fits" the 300M and some other Chrysler Corp. models. Now I find that it does not have the heat and memory (auto-tilt-down-in-reverse) features. The cable has only 5 conductors instead of the 9 in the...

"Remove Key" Message on Mercedes by The Doctor
A friend of mine has a Mercedes (3 series ?) that won't start intermittently... the message on the dash reads, "Remove Key" once removed and reinserted, it sometimes will start, sometimes not. There are no check engine lights or codes. Any ideas on this one? I'm thinking it might be the key itself...

Automobile: 2001 Nissan Sentra Problem: While driving the car after a gasoline full-up the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, and would not shut off. I checked that the gas cap was tight and let the tank run down, and filled up again. Same problem. Brought the car into my mechanic who read the...

"slapping" noise around fender when turning back and forth by Richard Catrambone
Hi, I have a 2005 Toyota Celica. I hear a "slapping" noise when I swerve the car a bit. It sounds very much like a piece of hose smacking up against metal. It appears to be coming from the area around the front passenger side fender. I removed the plastic protector under the fender and...

"Steer Ahead" by ChrisCoaster
Spec listed on the printout from my alignment shop. Measured in degrees. The printout also lists all the other usual specs - including Thrust Angle, and Total Toe(front & rear) that have been around since square wheels went out of style. What does "Steer Ahead" signify? -ChrisCoaster

"stretch bolts"? (Cylinder head) by George[_23_]
I'm considering taking the head off our '99 Cavalier 2.2L. A couple of parts stores have said that the head bolts are one-time-use "stretch bolts", and need to be replaced. The (GM) service manual doesn't say anything about this. I would appreciate any clarification. Thanks, George
