Honda "Drive by Wire" question... what if the power goes out? by
David E. Powell
Hi there.
I have been looking at the new Honda Civic, it's pretty sweet, and the
welds and everything are as nice as anything I have ever seen. I just
have a question about the "Drive by wire" system that they are supposed
to have.
What happens if the Engine dies on you? In my current car, my...

Belt dressing, pros and cons? by
Micheal C. Jordan
What are the pros and cons, if any, to applying the spray-on belt
dressings to a multi-vee belt? Does it get rid of a squeal? What is the
liquid in the can, and how is it supposed to work?

Best no BS motor oil/filter comparison? by
HiC
I see opinions of the "I swear by" type all over the map. Anyone know
of a good site that shows the truth about which brand/type of oil &
filter performs the best? Thinking in the passenger car realm.
Thanks

02 sensor and better gas mileage by
AK[_2_]
I had an oxygen sensor replaced.
Prior to that I got 20 mpg in the city for my CX7.
Now I am getting 21.5 mpg.
Could that increase be due to the replacement of the O2 sensor?
Thanks.

Are my business assumptions correct? by
micky
Are my business assumptions correct?
I'm trying to get rid of some engine trouble codes, and I need to
install 2 or 4 oxygen sensors. I know I can install one of them, and
if I find a place where I can jack up the car and work underneath, I can
probably do the remaining 2 or 3. I'd prefer to do...

$ per mile: high compression/high test vs. low compression/regular by
Existential Angst[_2_]
Awl --
As all usenet thermodynamicists know, engine efficiency increases with
higher compression.
But high test can cost 10% more than regular. Does high compression
increase engine efficiency by at least 10% to account for the higher cost of
high test gas?
My crude PV=nRT calcs + Carnot's...

OEM Tires, Optional OEM tires, and totally off-the-wall tires by
Hachiroku $B%O%A%m%/(B
My '89 Mazda 626:
The recommended tires were 185/70-14. I replaced them with the same size.
Acceleration was OK at best, and poor going up hills. Also, the amount of
sidewall flex made for poor cornering.
I replaced the original tires with the cheapest ones I could find, a $29
"loss leader" from...

Local Mechanic's Aligner Machine 'Insists'On Spec Settings
After a busy winter and the associated pot holes afterward,
I decided to have my car's alignment checked at a shop I
have used in the past, on my current car and on previous ones.
The guy is no 'McDonalds' aligner(just "get em in the...

Steering Rack Boot Replacement (clamp & tools) by
John Robertson[_3_]
Have you ever replaced the steering arm boot on a FWD vehicle?
I'm going to replace a Toyota steering arm boot for a friend (yes, I'm aware
a mechanic would replace the entire arm - let's not go there please) and I
have a question about the inside large steel clamp &...

Is it bad to start car with gas pedal to floor? by
[email protected]
Hello,
My old Chevy Lumina usually starts fine, but lately about 1 in 10
times it won't start unless I press gas pedal all the way to the
floor. Ordinarily, of course, i don't press gas pedal at all when
starting. It always turns over fine, just sometimes won't do any more
than that unless I do...

Why not methanol by
Don Stauffer in Minneapolis
Our governor is trying to pass a bill requiring all gas sold in
Minnesota in a few years contain 20% ethanol. Now, that is going to
require redesign of engines anyway. So why not use methanol instead of
ethanol?
The big push here is 'cause we grow corn. But methanol can be made from
much...

What exactly does cold pressure mean? by
Tom Adams
I help maintain a Ford E350 used for a vanpool.
The door panel spec says that the rear tires require 80 psi.
The sidewall specs on the rear tires say that the maximum pressure is
80 psi.
So, what does cold pressure mean exactly?
If I check the tires on a cold morning (say 35 degrees) I will end...

$20,000 over sticker for Chevy Volt is simply supply and demand by

"So you think the Chevrolet Volt electric car will cost too much? Tell
that to the Chevy dealer who has already decided to charge $20,000

That's right. Months before the first Volt lands on a showroom floor,
there's enough excitement that the dealer -- who earns a...

Ford expects that its 2012 Ford Focus, which will be shown at the

That would make the Focus compact car the most fuel-efficient car in

Driving Without A Thermostat by

I need your opinions on this.
A friend told me that a thermostat in a car is not necessary for proper
engine operation and that the thermostat is mainly there to provide
heat for people in the car. He said that cooler engines run better, are
more powerful, last a lot longer, and provides more...
